TRINITY DRAWS WITH SELWYN REDCLIFFS UNEXPECTED WIN OVER UNIVERSITY For the first time this season. Trinity failed to win its competition game, but the biggest surprise of the day was the defeat of University by Redcliffs. In its first game University won by 5 goals to 3, and the result of Saturday’s game was quite unexpected. Technical beat Sydenham In an even 'game by 1 goal to 0. Two games, between Technical and Sydenham in the third grade and Redcliffs and Technical B in the fourth grade, set down for Linwood Park, were not played because of the wetness of the ground. The following table shows the positions of the senior teams: —

Trinity and University have a match to play.

TRINITY (2) V. SELWYN (2)

In spite of the muddy ground, Trinity and Sehvyn played first-class hockey. S. Andrews played a magnificent game and the result was largely due to his sound defence.

After defending two penalty corners in quick succession, Selwyn forced play to Trinity’s end, where J. Andrews took a quick shot which cleared the net. A right-wing attack by the Trinity forwards gave McCormick a chance, but again Andrews averted the danger. Half-time came with no score. Trinity set up a strong offensive, which was blocked by Andrews, who sent the Selwyn forwards away through the centre. Dawe finished off a great movement by netting cleverly. Trinity was not long in equalising when Davies went down the left wing and sent a good pass across, which N. Bowden netted. Play flashed up and down and both sets of backs were kept hard at work. T. Burke started a Selwyn offensive, which J. Andrews carried through, but S. Bowden cleared play to the other end, where Loader passed the ball to Radcliffe. Radcliffc's shot was blocked by Bellamy, but N. Bowden connected with the rebound and netted. Selwyn attacked. Hayes sending in from the right, and a solid scramble in the Trinity goal-mouth ended in Cornish equalising. The closing stages were fast and full of interest. Final score: Trinity 2, Selwyn 2. Referees: Messrs C. Bellamy and C. H. Franklin. TECHNICAL (1) v. SYDENHAM (0) Technical beat Sydenham in a close and even game that was marked for poor circle play. Numerous opportunities of scoring were - lost by both sides. The muddy ground, especially in the circles, was largely responsible for the weakness in circle play. The play was even and went up and down the field continuously. The only score of the game came in the closing stages of the first spell, when Moir collected a pass from Lohrcy and went in to net easily. R. Meynell and W. Cole played sterling games for Technical, whose half-line was weakened by the absence of A. Rogers, who had not fully recovered from his injury on the previous Saturday. Half-time came with the score:. Technical 1, Sydenham 0. The second spell was more in Sydenham’s favour, and only sound defence by Meynell and Cole kept Technical’s goal intact. Woolcock missed an easy chance when Clack sent across from the right. A. Grafton made some good runs on Sydenham's left and centred well, but the chances were not accepted. Lohrey and Silver worked hard in Technical’s front line, but Dash and Simpson set up a solid defence. Final score: Technical 1, Sydenham 0. Referees: Messrs E. Cummins and H. Teague. REDCLIFFS (3) v. UNIVERSITY (1) Redcliffs created a surprise by beating University by 3 goals to 1. Neither team was at full strength; Thomson was absent from Redcliffs, and Duftield and Ford were missing from University’s front line. The game was marred by frequent infringements. Redcliffs had the better of the first spell, and a scramble in University’s goal enabled G. Burke to open Redcliffs’ accourlt. Redcliffs 1. University 0. Shortly after the Burke brothers broke through and J. Burke scored. Kedcliffs 2, University 0. Huston and Barnett were leading the University forwards well, but offside play lost many chances of scoring. Half-time came with tire score: Redcliffs 2, University 0.

University took charge on resuming, Barnett centring well without result. Play was transferred to University’s end, where a free hit gave G. Burke a chance to add a third goal. Redcliffs 3, University 0. University set up a series of determined attacks, and was twice unlucky to miss scoring. A penalty corner in the Redcliffs circle gave Cooper a chance to score University’s only goal. Redcliffs threw away several opportunities through offside play and in the. final stages University kept the game in Redcliffs’ circle, where four penalty corners were taken in succession without result. Final score; Redcliffs 3, University 1.

Referees: Messrs C. C. Holland and W H. Down.
