OFFICIAL FORECASTS

[THX PBBBS Special Servlet.] WELLINGTON, July 5. The Dominion Observatory’s weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m., and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: — North-westerly gale, backing to sonth-westerly gale by to-morrow morning. Weather boisterous, with widespread rain; becoming very cold to-morrow, with snow and hall in places. Seas rough to high. •■-p following is the Dominion rThe weather will be stormy, with general rain; many heavy falls and considerable flooding being probable, more especially in the western areas; temperatures becoming verv cold, with snow on high levels and hail in places. A very deep and extensive depression has moved with unusual rapidity across the Tasman Sea on to New Zealand, the pressure falling as low as 28.47 inches in the extreme south to-day. Winds—Strong to gale generally, and In places reaching heavy gale force; southerly in the southern portion of the South Island: elsewhere northwesterly to westerly, but southerlies extending over the Dominion within the next 24 hours. Seas (New Zealand waters)— Rough to high. Western Tasman Sea—Westerly gales at first in the northern portion. but south-westerly to southerly gales soon becoming general: seas nigh. CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER The week-end in Christchurch was warm and sunny, with little or no wind on Saturday, and a north-west-erly breeze yesterday. Last night the barometric pressure dropped to a very low level, but had begun to pick up again by midnight. At 1 o’clock this morning the weather was clear, with a strong borth-westerly wind. The temperature was 50 degrees and the barometer, rising, registered 29.77 inches. IN OTHER PLACES Auckland —There was a continuation of boisterous and wet weather during the week-end. A fresh breeze was blowing both days, from the southwest on Saturday and from the north yesterday. Showers fell during Saturday morning and continuous light rain set in yesterday afternoon. After being steady at SO.OOin from noon until midnight on Saturday, the barometer | fell ,65in in 26 hours, the reading at 4 p.m. yesterday being 29.35 in. Wellington—Saturday was fine and sunny with a moderate northerly wind. The maximum temperature was 55.7 degrees. After midnight the wind increased rapidly in force and from early yesterday morning and throughout the day a boisterous northerly blew, gusts up to 60 miles an hour being recorded. Almost continuous rain fell. The maximum temperature was 50.7 degrees. Dunedin—There was a slight breeze from the south-west on Saturday, but the sun shone brightly, and the temperature was mild. The barometer fell ta the afternoon. Yesterday was bright and sunny with a warm north-westerly breeze.
