Jean Olga McLeod, the holder of a two-year scholarship at the Hoyal Academy of Music, London, is to leave next week for England. Her mother will go with her. Mrs Arthur K~rten ("Stoneycroft,” Mount Pleasant) will attend the conference of Women’s Institutes which will be held in the Town Hall, Dunedin, at the end of July. Delegates will be accorded a civic welcome by the Mayor of Dunedin. . Mrs Walsh (Manchester street) is visiting her daughter, Mrs E. J. Keenan, Little River. M ss L. D. Allen. (Bealey avenue), who has been the guest of Mrs J. G. Skinner, "Wairewa,” Little River, has returned home. Mr Crosland, of Worcester, England, accompanied by Mr and Mrs Hughes, Christchurch, was a recent visitor to Akaroa. Mr Crosland is visiting members of the Society of Friends throughout New Zealand and is keenly interested in the early history of the Dominion. Mrs J. McLeod (Loburn) and Mrs Ross Mac Donald (Annat) will be visitors to Dunedin for the annual conference of Women’s Institutes, which will open on July 29. Mr Gore Adams (Egypt), Dr. and Mrs C. E. Adams (Wellington), and Miss V. I. Jacobson, of Wellington, who have been on a motor tour of the South Island, Including the West Coast Glaciers, Eglinton Valley, and the Southern Lakes, are visiting relatives at Akaroa. Mr Gore Adams is on furlough from Egypt. Mrs B. L. Blunden (“Carvossa,” Waikari), president of the North Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes, will be a visitor to Dunedin for the annual conference, which will open on July 29. Mrs J. W. Niven (Barbadoes street, St. Albans), who has left for Wellington, will motor to Auckland, where she will join the Monowai for a trip to the South Sea Islands. Mrs H. H. Allison (Opawa) has returned from a holiday visit to the North Island. Mrs William Deans (“Sandown”), a member of the Dominion Council of Women’s Institutes, will attend the annual conference to be held in Dunedin on July 29, 30, and 31. Mrs C. F. le Cren (Wanganui) is the guest of Miss Marriott Watson, 29 Cambridge terrace. Mr and Mrs A. Vere Winchester (Cashmere Hills) will leave this morning for Dunedin to visit Mr Winchester’s sister, Mrs Rupert Fountain. Mrs Harvey J. Brunt (Harper street, Timaru) has returned from a visit to Dunedin. Miss Honor Fry (Lower Hutt), head prefect of Marsden School, Wellington, has been awarded a scholarship entitling her to study for three years at the Physical Culture Training College, Chelsea. She will leave soon for England to enter the college. Mrs Peter Fraser, wife of the Minister for Health and Education, will, on Wednesday, formally open the conference of delegates of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, to be held in Wellington next week. The marriage took place recently in the Chapel of King’s College, Otahuhu, of Miss Maisie Elaine Hopkins, only child of the late Mr and M s Harold Hopkins, formerly of Christchurch and Westport, and later of Hamilton, to Mr John Keith Butler Lusk, eldest son of Mr and Mrs J. B. Lusk, Epsom, Auckland. On July 14 at Christ -Church, Lancaster Gate, London, the mar■*ingo will be celebrated of Miss Lesley James, daughter of Mr and Mrs Howard James, Carlton Mill road, Christchurch, and Mr Philip Carter, a London solicitor. OBITUARY MRS PHEBE BRITTAN The death occurred on Thursday afternoon at her home, Jolie street, Aharoa, of Mrs Phebe Brittan, in her ninety-fourth year. Mrs Brittan was born at Romsley Hill, Worcestershire. England, and married Mr Bird, a gardener by profession, When Mr Bird died, his widow with her one daughter came to New Zealand to her brother, the late Mr Stephen Hunt, of French Farm, and stayed with relatives. Later she settled in Wellington for a short peroid. Later she went to Ak4ros'where she married Mr Brittan, then curator of the Akaroa Domain, who died 10 years ago. Mrs Brittan had always enjoyed excellent health, and lived by herself until last February, when she became bedridden. MUSICALE A musical afternoon party sponsored by the committee of the New Brighton sub-branch of the Red Cross Society was held at “Ingestre,” the home of Mr and Mrs Alan A. Boon, Lonsdale street, New Brighton. Items were given by Mesdames W. McNair and D. F. Dennehy (pianoforte solos), Mesdames L. Scrimshaw and R. Voller (songs), and Mrs F, Holmes (musical monologue). A competition was won by Miss A. Smith (Hastings). The Mayoress of New Brighton (Mrs E. L. Smith) thanked the artists for their attendance, and Mrs Boon for the use of her home. CARD PARTIES

A euchre party, arranged by the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the New Brighton sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers’ / :ociation was held in the Maori Tearooms, New Brighton. The prizewinners were Mcsdames F, Cullimore and G. Ludbrook, r, d Messrs J. Merritt and G. Cattermole. A whist evening party arranged by the social committee of the New Brighton Bowling Club, was held in the pavilion, where the prizes were won by Mrs W. Cant and Mr W. Larcpmbe. A successful euchre party, organised bv the social committee of the South Brighton Progress League to assist the league’s funds, was held in the Bridge street hall, South Brighton. The successful players were Mesdames G. Duncan and J. Chegwin, and Messrs P. Buist and R. Campbell. Mr S. J. Grammer was master of ceremonies. The committee of the New Brighton District High School held a* “flag 500” party in the High School this week to raise funds. The prizes were won by Mcsdames W. Kennedy, R. Kennedy, and R. Hanna. PLUNKET BALL The annual ball of the Hornby branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Orange Hall, Hornby. The guests, including a number of visitors from Christchurch, danced to the music of Fred Whitelaw's orchestra. An energetic committee, Mesdames J. Gunderson, W. Leslie, G. B. Gray, A. Johansen, L. Still, L. Brownie, T. Hunter, G. Cox, F. Helmore, H. Spicer. Messrs T. Hunter, J. Frogley, and H. Herman, were responsible for the arrangements. Guests of honour were Mr C. Morgan Williams. MP., and Mrs Williams, Mr and Miss O’Flynn and Mr F, Cook. An ‘ exhibition dance was given by Mr J. Cook and Miss White, and novelty dances were won by Miss G. Bayley and Mr Taylor and Miss C.
