The tenth anniversary of the found- \ I ing of the Blood Transfusion Institute in Moscow was marked the other day by the publication of statistics showing the development of its work in the Soviet Union. The institute performed 22,000 transfusions last year. The in- j stitute, with headquarters and a large research staff in Moscow, is headed by Dr. A, A. Bagdasaroff, and has 50 departments and 514 branches in various localities. It has trained 16,000 doctors in transfusion technique, and has built up an army of donors, who are respected as performers of comradely service. The institute is said to be the first of its kind in the world. One by-product of the transfusion institute’s work is the invention of the “artificial heart” by Dr. Serge Brukhanenko.
