INDUCTION OF NEW VICAR

LARGE CONGREGATION AT TEMUKA SERVICE j j WELCOME TO THE REV. L. j ! BARNES I i ; i . I The induction of the Rev. Lewis A. | Barnes as vicar of the Anglican parish J of St. Peter’s took place in St. Peter's j Church, Temuka, on Thursday evening. The church was packed for the service, which was conducted by Archdeacon H. W. Monaghan, of Timaru, assisted by Canon J. F. Courscy, Geraldine. The procession of clergy was met at the main door of the church by the wardens. Messrs B. Hughes and f'. A. Joynt. The occasional address was delivered by Archdeacon Monaghan. Later a welcome was given by Mr and Mrs Barnes in the parish hall. Mr Joynt, vicar’s warden, introduced the new vicar and expressed the pleasure which they all felt at securing the services of so worthy a minister. I>Tr Hughes, people’s warden, welcomed the new vicar and Mrs Barnes for the parishioners. For the parishes and clergy of the archdeaconry of South Canterbury, Archdeacon Monaghan extended their best wishes to Mr Barnes, his wife, and his family. He had had. he said, some splendid curates under him in Timaru in the last 10 years, but he assured the gathering there was none better than their new vicar. Gratitude that after so many weeks without a vicar they should be able to welcome such a vicar as Mr Barnes was expressed by Mr L. H, Orbell, for the of St. John's Church, Winchester. A welcome in Maori was given by Mr T. Paiki for the Maori parishioners of Holy Trinity Church, Arowhenua. He assured the new vicar of the hearty co-operation of his Maori parishioners. • Mr Barnes thanked the gathering for the warmth and kindliness of its welcome to himself and Mrs Barnes. Although they had come from a distance, he felt that in time they would become very much at home In Temuka, Jnd would be in every way as happy as they had been in other places. A short programme was then given as follows: Songs. Mr Randal Herron, Mrs F. H. RuddenLlau, and Misses Winnie and Ivy Ives; conjuring tricks, Mr Hartley Hope. Supper was served and a short dance followed. The accompanists were Mrs L. V. Talbot and Mrs Hutcheson. Mrs Hutcheson also played for the dancing.
