The Dominion Observatory’s weather forecast far Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at' 5 p.m., and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: — Strong south-west to westerly winds, shortly more southerly, and rising at times to gale force, but decreasing to-mor-row. Weather cold and changeable, with passing showers at times and some nail, but gradually improving to-morrow. Seas rough to high. The following* is the Dominion forecast;— Weather cold, changeable and squally generally, with passing showers and in places hail; snow on some of the ranges; conditions improving gradually from tomorrow. A sharp depression is passing rapidly eastwards off the Dominion, and a secondary depression is now on to southern districts. An anti-cyclone is following it across the Tasman Sea. Winds—Westerly to north-westerly at first in. the southern half of the South Island; otherwise south-westerly to southerly prevailing, strong generally and of gale force at places, but gradually moderating. Seas (New Zealand waters)— Rough to high. Eastern Tasman—Southwesterly to southerly winds, of strong to gale force, but decreasing to-mor-row; seas rough to high. CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER The first southerly storm for some days struck Christchurch early yesterday morning. At first the weather was not very cold, but later it became very chilly, although the afternoon was sunny There was a light fog in the evening, which later was clear and cold. At 1 o’clock this morning the weather was cloudy, witha breeze from the south-west. The temperature was 38 degrees. The barometer, falling slowly, registered 29.80 inches. IN OTHER PLACES Auckland— Yesterday the weather was cold and wintry. A strong southwest wind blew in squalls, which at times reached gale force, * re " quent heavy showers fell. The barometer fell .25 inches during the morning and then remained steady at 29.75 inches until the evening, when a slight rise was recorded. Wellington—A southerly wind came up this morning and blew with gale force for most of the day, hard gusts being at the rate of 63 miles an hour at 11.15 a.m. There was very cold and squally weather, heavy showers and at times hail falling during the morning. The weather improved somewhat during the afternoon, the sun shining for part of the time, and only occasional showers falling. The minimum temperature during Thursday night was 45.0 degrees, and the maximum yesterday was 49.6 degrees. Dunedin —There was a light coating of snow on the hills surrounding the city yesterday morning, and the weather was cold throughout the day, though the sun shone brightly.
