RUGBY LEAGUE
THE NO-REPLACEMENTS RULE
The Canterbury Rugby League yesterday received from the New Zealand Council a ruling that, as to-day’s representative match, Canterbury v. West Coast, is in some respects a trial match, the noreplacements rule need not be enforced. As a consequence R, Chastbn (Sydenham) and T. Carey (Sydenham) have been selected as emergencies for the Canterbury team. ASSOCIATION CODE FIRST TEST AGAINST AUSTRALIANS VISITORS’ CHANCES FAVOURED [THE PRESS Special Service.] DUNEDIN, July 3. For the first time in 14 years an Association football match between Australian and New Zealand teams will be played in the Dominion tomorrow, Dunedin being the venue. A strong New Zealand team has been selected, but the Australians have the advantage of combination, and their chances are favoured. The game against Otago on Wednesday showed that the Australians are not invincible, and though fielding their strongest team, they will have to produce their best fo- m to win. Although the New Zealanders have not had a game together, the team is so constituted that men are paired who understand each other’s play. Moreover the forwards are a fine line, having little or nothing to learn from the Australians in science, ball control, or dash. In all the circumstances an outstanding exhibition of the game is anticipated from two well-matched teams The weather to-night is clear and cold, with prospects of a reasonably fine day. The Logan Park ground, however, has not had much opportunity to improve since Wednesday, when it was distinctly on the heavy side. Its condition will doubtless to some extent favour New Zealand. The match has aroused the keenest interest of all the followers of Association football, and a large attendance is assured.
