OBITUARY

MR THOMAS QpAW 3 The death occurred a* to* home, Springston South, of Mr Thomas Quayle, a and highlyrespected farmer in the district, to, his eighty-ninth year. He was bom in the Isle of Man, to 1846- After leaving school he took up farming and came to New Zealand in 1880 in the ship Pleiades. He landed m Lyttelton and settled first at entered the service of Mr H. Overton of Meadowbank, for whom he was appointed workmg manager. In he removed to Greenpark and began farming on his own account. He was chief organiser of the Greenpark Dairy Factory and was also chairman of directors for many years. He was for 13 years chairman of the Greenpark School Committee and also served for a time on the Springs, tomd Board. He took an active part in the welfare of the Methodist Church, of which he was a local preacher. _ Before going to Springston South he married Miss Mary Andrew, elder daughter of Mr W. B. Andrew, of Greenpark- He was a very active member of the Springston South Hall Committee, of which he was chairman for many years. He is survived by his widow* two daughters and a son. The Funeral The funeral, which left his home lor the Springston cemetery, was a large one. The service was conducted, pv the Rev. O. H. Hendon at the hoxioe and graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs T. O. Morgan, H. Delieu, W Bray, and F. W. Andrew (brother-iu-law). Wreaths were sent by the wife and family, Mr and Mrs P. W. Andrew and Gwen, Mr and Mrs Mcßean and family. Guild Ladies, the Hall Committee, Mr Parrett and family, the teachers and pupils of Springston South Sunday School, Mr and Mrs R. Tyson and family, H. Matson, and Company, and Mrs C. Pannell. MR HENRY HOOKER Mr Henry Hooker, aged 78, who died in the Wanganui Public Hospital on Wednesday, had lived for 61 years in Wanganui and was born at Now Plymouth, where he served his time in the blacksmithing trade. Mr Hooker took a great interest In billiards, rifle shooting and cycling, and also belonged to the armed constabulary, participating in the Parihaka disturbance many years ago. He was a competitor at the Nelson rifle meeting in 1882 and was a crack shot, winning the Wanganui championship belt. He was a foundation member of the Wanganui Defence Rifle Club at Aramoho. He and his wife found great enjoyment in cycling. They made several long journeys, once travelling to Auckland and back, (to another occasion they cycled from Christchurch through the Otira Gorge U> the West Coast and back through Nelson. A keen billiardist, he played against Clafk McConachy at Wanganui last year, and was so successful that the champion expressed surprise that a player of his age could have done so well.
