RAILWAYS CONTROL
REPLY TO CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE U*i4EfiS ASSOCIATION TKLEOHAM., WELLINGTON, July 3. Representations from the Associated Chambers of Commerce, which had expressed regret that the Railways Amendment Bill made the railways again subject to political control and liable to political interference, were acknowledged by the Minister for Railways (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) at today’s meeting of the executive of the Associated Chambers. The Minister wrote assuring the executive that he appreciated the sincerity of its purpose in placing its views before him; but on behalf of the Government he would state that in reintroducing Ministerial control it had no intention of neglecting in any way the principles of administration most calculated to ensure the highest standards of efficiency. “It will not be necessary,” said the Minister, “to stress the fact that any contemplated expenditure on construction ventures will be carefully weighed and the Government will assume full responsibility for any action arising out of its policy in this connexion.”
