ALLOCATION FOR THE UNEMPLOYED

FIGURES FOR RANGIORA The number of relief workers in the Rangiora district who receive sustenance is Increasing steadily. Three times as many men as will be employed under No. 5 scheme will receive payments next week. Details of the are as follows, with this week’s figures in parenthesis:—Sustenance, 99 (91); No. 5 scheme, 32 (33). Golf Club Committee Winners of the McFarlane Cup, competed for annually among members of the Rangiora Golf Club, will also receive a trophy presented by the club. This decision was made at a meeting of the committee of the club on Thursday evening. The president (Mr P. G. Ellis) presided. Two country members were elected, and one member was transferred from the 'honorary to the active list. The treasurer (Mr F. G. Tolmie) reported a credit balance at the bank, and a substantial increase in green fees for the month,* compared with the corresponding month last year. Salvation Army Social In aid of the Biblical pageant to be given in September, the Rangiora Salvation Army held a social evening on Thursday. Duets were sung by Misses Jean Duffell and Daphne Dench, and Mrs D. Houghton and Mr W. Smith. Miss Olga Holmes gave a recitation. Competitions were won by Mrs L. Walls. Misses V. McKay, D. Dench, G. Hurley, E. Duffell, and M. Walker and Brian and Terry Walls. Personal Mr E H. Schluter is a patient at the Christchurch Public Hospital, and is making satisfactory progress after an operation. Regent Theatre “No More Ladies,” Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s new Joan Crawford picture, co-starring Robert Montgomery, to be presented this afternoon and evening at the Regent Theatre, Rangiora, is a comedy with strong drama of the tactics used by a modern woman to hold her husband. Also featured are Franchot Tone, Edna May Oliver, and Charles Ruggles. On Tuesday afternoon and evening, “Hell in the Heavens,” a dramatic romance of the Air Force, will be presented. Warner Baxter and Conchita Montenegro are the stars. On Thursday evening, the comedy romance, “The Good Fairy,” will be presented, with Margaret Smlavan and Herbert Marshall in the lead. PERMANENT OUTLET TO LAKE ELLESMERE POSSIBLE VISIT BY MINISTER FOR PUBLIC WORKS The members present at the monthly meeting of the Ellesmere Lands Drainage Board were Messrs John Sharp (chairman), H. J. Macartney, R. McLachlan, H. Pickering, F. Coop, W. Downey, and G. W. R. Osborne. A sub-committee which has been considering the making of a new cut at Motukarara, to shorten the course of the Halswell river to Lake Elies- 1 mere, was given authority to consult the ratepayers interested when the plans and specifications were received. Mr H. E. Herring, M.P.. wrote saying that he was endeavouring to get the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) to visit Lake Ellesmere to discuss the proposal to have a permanent outlet made. He also asked if the board would cut an outlet channel further south along the beach when next in became necessary to let the lake out, instead of making a cut at the old site. It was decided to reply that the board was prepared to make a trial cut at the new site suggested, but that it would be necessary for the lake level to be not less than three feet to ensure success. The rates agreed upon for the current year were: Halswell river area (three classifications): 11-32 d, 13-32 d and 10-32 d; lake area, 11-32 d, 6-32 d and 5-32 d; Price’s Valley special area, 12d. In his report the secretary said that the leyel of Lake Ellesmere on June 29 was Ift 9in above lake datum, there having been a of 5 inches since June 3. There was discussion about the dirty condition of the water in the Halswell river in the last few months, and the loss of trout. It was decided to make enquiries with a view to having the water analysed. ELLESMERE SHOW ASSOCIATION ACCEPTS GIFT OF TROPHY Mr H. O. Gardiner presided over a meeting of. the general committee of the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association. An offer from Mrs L. R. Barnett of a cup for the short-woolled sheep classes, in memory of her husband, was accepted with thanks. The sub-committees revised the schedule of classes for'the annual show, to be held on October 22, and their recommendations were afterwards adopted by the general committee. LEESTON ODDFELLOWS’ LODGE Bro. H. J. Hurford presided over a fortnightly meeting of the Leeston Oddfellows’ Lodge. The Juvenile Council of Canterbury acknowledged a grant from Leeston Lodge. It was decided to apply for the assistance of the ritual committee for a lodge night in August and to invite the Rakaia Lodge to pay a visit the same evening. It was also decided to enter for the ritual and efficiency competition again this* year. The grand master would visit the lodge on July 13, it was reported. School Games Results of the games played by Ellesmere schools on Thursday are Football —Leeston 15, Southbridge 0; Irwell-Brookside-Doyleston 6, Dun-sandel-Selwyn-Killinchy 6. Basketball —Lakeside 10, Southbridge 5; Leeston 15, Killinchy-Leeston Convent 10.

DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATED

LOYAL OXFORD LODGE OF ODDFELLOWS To celebrate the diamond jubilee of the Loyal Oxford Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., nearly 100 Oddfellows attended a banquet in the Oxford Town Hall recently. Among the visitors were the Ashley district officers and representatives of several sister lodges. Bro. E. C. Barnes, P.D.G.M., a former secretary of the lodge, presided. After the loyal toast, the chairman proposed that of “The Manchester Unity.” "The Grand Master and Board of Directors” was proposed by Bro. W. Gardner, P.D.G.M.; "The District Officers” was proposed by Bro. R. Russell, P.G., and responded to by Bros. B. A. Fitzpatrick, D.G.M., D. J. Grant, D.D.G.M., C. I. Jennings, D.S., and W. Coles, 1.P.D.G.M., who spoke for the Ashley district, and wished the lodge continued prosperity. “The Loyal Oxford Lodge” was proposed by Bro. J. A. Ivory, P.D.G.M., who said that from a foundation of 11 the membership had grown to 134, which included six women members. In the 60 years of the lodge’s existence £13,000 hat. been paid as sick pay, £3271 having been disbursed since the golden jubilee was celebrated in 1926. In responding, Bro. E. C. Barnes, P.D.G.M., gave seme interesting information about the early history of the lodge. Other toasts honoured were: “Oldest Members,” proposed by Bro. H. G. Cross, and responded to by Bros. R. Lilley and J. Stevens; "Sister Lodges,” proposed by Bro. L. E. Meyers; "Medical Officers,” proposed by Bro. G. Dailey, P.G., and responded to by Dr. L. B, Burnett: “Kindred Societies,” proposed by Bro. G. Paget, I. “The Ladies,” proposed by Bro. L. Paterson, and responded to by Bro. L. E. Cecil P.G., and Sister A. J. Gardner, P.G.; "The Chairman,” and “The Secretary of the Jubilee Committee” (Sister E. Gilbert). During the evening community singing was conducted by Bro. L. E. Cecil, and items were given by Sisters M. and T. Paget, Bros. E. C. Barnes, G. Dailey, J. Gilchrist, L. E. Cecil, C. I. ,Jennings, R. Russell, E. H. Trollope, and F. Meyers. OXFORD FARMERS’ UNION WEATHER FORECAST FROM DUNEDIN DISCUSSED The committee of the Oxford branch of the Farmers’ Union met on Thursday afternoon, when the president, Mr J. E. A. McGrath, presided, A report of the judging in the competition for the best tree-planted farm was presented. It was suggested that in the competition in future, more consideration be given to newer planting and more recent extensions. The president mentioned the importance of having the Dunedin, weather forecast as an advance forecast of unfavourable weather in Canterbury. It was decided to refer this matter again to the provincial executive. He also referred to the export of railway scrap iron, and thought that with little trouble much of this might be made available to farmers. If rails were put on the market the.v would probably be a goed demand from local boards and farmers. It was decided to ask the provincial executive to consider this matter. Social Evening The Oxford branch of the Returned Soldiers - Association held a social evening in the Agricultural and Pastoral Association Hall. Major H. K. Kippenberger gave ah interesting lecture on "Modern War Equipment,” A framed portrait of King George V, was unveiled, the ceremony being performed by Major F. J. Gorton. SOUTHBROOK CHURCH CONCERT A concert was held in aid of the Methodist Church at the Coronation Hall at Southbrook. The programme was: —Pianoforte solo, Miss D. Ayers, recitation, Miss M. Stanton; duet, Messrs K. G. Taylor and E. Horsley, recitations, Mr A. E. Butterfield; yiolm duet, Messrs J. C. Hancox and A, Breach; two one-act plays, pitied “A Sister to Assist ’Er,” and World Without Men.” FAREWELL GATHERING AT HORRELVILLE A social evening was held, recently in the Hoirelville McthodistChurch. in honour of Mr and Mrs C. V. Woodfield and family, who have left the district to live in Palmerston North. The evening passed pleasantly in games and competitions. The competitions were won by Mrs C. V. Woodfield and Messrs Geoffrey Woodfleld and A. Yates. The Horrelvilte Glee Club sang three part songs. Hisses May Blackrnore, Joyce Graham, and Isabel Shsat were in charge of the programme. Mr F Sheat. in presenting Mr and Mrs C. V. Woodfleld v/ith a travelling rug and a parcel of linen, expressed his appreciation of the services they had given to the church. Mr Woodfield had been a local preacher for about 30 years. Fountain-pens were presented to Misses Everal and Clarice Woodfleld and Mr Geoffrey Woodfleld. SHEFFIELD DRAMA GROUP FIVE PLAYS PRESENTED The Sheffield Hall was filled recently when the Sheffield Drama Group, under the leadership of Mr J. D. Tooms and Mr A. Petrie, presented five oneact play—one tragedy and four comedies. The casts of the plays were as follows: —“The Capture,” Messrs B. Robinson, R. Adams, and L, Jones; ‘‘The Miracle Merchant,” Mrs J. D. Tooms, Mrs H. Taylor, Miss M. Bates, Mr A. Petrie, and Mr F. Bull; “Shanghai,” Mrs J. B. Baxter. Miss A. Stephens, Mr A. Petrie, and Mr K. Adams; “The Christening,” Mrs J. D. Tooms, Miss A. Finer, Miss D. Hawkins, Miss B. Rennie, Miss A. Stephens, and Mr L. W. Rothwell; “T’ Pup.” Miss Rennie, Mr J. D. Tooms, and Mr L. Melrose. RETURNED SOLDIERS VISIT HORORATA A large audience attended the concert given at Hororata by the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association concert party, and the funds of the Hororata branch will benefit considerably. Items were given by the following; Mr Harry Francis, Mr Jack Crisp, Mr Charles Sumnc •. “Swanko, Miss Kathleen Ainger, Miss Waveney Bowbyes, Miss Joan O’Neill, Miss Lily Robertson, Miss Rene Algie, and Miss Lilian Harper. Members of the Christchurch executive who attended were Messrs B. O. Priddis (president), W. H. Darby, A. L. Emerson, anl W. E. Leadley.

AKAROA DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

GRANT OF £SO FOR GROUND IMPROVEMENTS The Rev. H. Nelson Wright presided at a committee meeting of the Akaroa District High School. The Canterbury Education Board notified the committee that a grant of £SO had been made towards Improvements in the secondary school grounds. It was stated that the grant was not from the High School Board’s funds. The meeting decided, before any decision on how the £SO should be spent, to ask the Education Board when the old vicarage would be removed, as the board had not yet accepted any particular tender for the purchase of the building for removal. Consolidation of Schools Mr C. S. Thompson,. chairman, and Mr W. P. Spencer, of the Canterbury Education Board, attended meetings of householders at Barry’s Bay, Duvauchelle, Robinson’s Bay, and Takamatua. Mr E, Glynan presided at the Takamatua meeting, and it was decided to close the school and send the children to Akaroa. Mr J. Hayward presided at the Robinson’s Bay meeting, but the householders were not unanimously in favour of consolidation. The committee is now awaiting a report from the Canterbury Education Board. St. Patrick’s Church An enjoyable progressive euchre party was held in St. Patrick’s schoolroom. Mesdames Oliver Hunt and H. W, Oliver were the hostesses. The prizes for the highest scores were won by Miss S. Brown and Mr J. McNab, and the consolation prizes by Mrs W. Pool and Miss Alma Hunt. LITTLE RIVER WOMEN’S INSTITUTE GIFT AFTERNOON TO AID HOSPITAL FUNDS A special meeting of the Little River Women’s Institute, which took the form of a gift afternoon for the Little River Hospital, was held at the Triangle Hall. The afternoon was spent in games, competitions, and singing. Mrs J. McGowan’s Ward won the singing competition, and the hat competition was won by Mrs C. Withers. Sister Savage, of the Little River Hospital, thanked the Women’s Institute for its efforts. Afternoon tea was served. June Rainfall The rainfall for June as recorded by Mr D. Richards, Okuti Valley, Little River, was 1.24 inches. Rain fell on five days, the heaviest fall being .42in on June 28. Rainfall to date in IUS6 was 38.83 and for the same period in 1935 28.22 in. The rainfall for June, 1935, was 11.121 n. BALL AT SCARGILL OPENING OP ADDITION TO HALL To mark the opening of the new wing of the Scargill Hall building, a ball was held under the combined auspices of the Scargill Tennis Club and the Hail Committee. There was a large attendance, including visitors from Amberley, Waikari, and-other districts. The arrangements were successfully carried out by the committee, with Mr L, H. Parnham as chairman and Mrs Parnham as secretary. The decorations of bracken, evergreens, and flowers were arranged by Miss O. Gibb and Mr G. Gardner. Music was played by the EvansCampbell dance band, and Messrs J. Lambie and H. Shadrach were masters of ceremonies. The hall building fund has received the sum of £7 6s lid, the credit balance from the ball, from the ball committee. MALVERN MEN’S HOCKEY ASSOCIATION FIVE-A-SIDB TOURNAMENT ARRANGED Mr A. Petrie presided over a meeting of the Malvern Men’s Hockey Association, which was held in the Memorial Hall. Delegates were present from the Sheffield, Kirwee, Greendale, and Darfield Clubs. Arrangements for a flve-a-side tournament, to be held at Greendale on July 18, were made. Invitations were received from the Mid-Canterbury Sub-Association and the Sydenham Club for a Malvern team to visit them. The secretary reported that he had made arrangements for two teams to play Sydenham on July 4, and he was instructed to arrange a suitable date with the Mid-Canterbury Sub-Association. It was decided that the Malvern Sub-Association would not take part in the competition this year for the Quatrebras Cup. Social Evening The bridge and euchre evening conducted by a committee of the Darfield Bowling, Croquet, and Tennis Club was held in the Memorial Hall on Thursday evening. The winners of the bridge were Mr and Mrs S. R. Oldridge and Miss D. Robinson, and the euchre was won by Mrs J. Rusbatch and Mr J. S, McLaughlin. Those present said farewell to Mr I. Cornelius, whb is leaving the district, and he was presented with a travelling rug and suitcase from the sports bodies and residents of the district. ELLESMERE MINIATURE ' RIFLE ASSOCIATION Results of the weekly competition shoots of the Ellesmere Miniature Rifle Association are, as follows; A Grade —Sedgemere-Lakeside 624, Southbridge 624. B ‘ Grade —Sedgemere-Lakeside 607, Southbridge No. 1 597; Killinchy 614, Southbridge No. 2 577. Team Positions—A grade: Southbridge 7 points, Sedgemere-Lakeside 5, Leeston 0. B grade: Southbridge No. 1 8 points, Sedgemere-Lakeside 8, Kiliinchy 6, Southbridge No. 22, Leeston 0. H. Hill is leading in the A grade individual aggregate, and R. Richards in the B grade. .
