RED CROSS SOCIETY

CANTERBURY CENTRE MEETS A meeting of the executive of the Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society (Incorporated) was held recently, 'mere were - present Mr C. J. Ronaldson (chairman), Lady Wigram, Mesdames E. Peate, H. H. Smith, C. J. Treleaven, and J. Stevenson, Messrs H. H. Holland, H. L. Bowker, and A. L. PrattThe financial statements and reports showed that during the month of May former service patients had received attention at most of the hospitals and sanatoriums in Canterbury. Adjutant Pratt’s report showed that he had visited former servicemen in the Sunnyside Mental Hospital weekly and had distributed Red Cross comforts to the men there.

The depot report showed that during the month of May, 296 families, with 761 children, had been supplied with 2616 garments, and that 266 men had been provided with 627 garments. In addition, 143 pensioners had been provided with articles of clothing. Air Hughes’ report on the work at the Red Cross Club, Hanmer* Springs, was received. He stated that there had been in Queen Mary Hospital 39 patients, of which number 11 were former servicemen.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

north canterbury FEDERATION A meeting of the North Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes was held at the Young Men’s Christian Association’s rooms yesterday. Those present were Mesdames B. L. Blunden (in the chair), W. Deans, Ross Mac Donald, R. A. Fougere, W. J. MacLeod, Nelson-Wright, A. Morten, Misses E. Jacobson and D. Warren. Mrs B. L. Blunden was elected as the federation’s delegate to the annual conference to be held in Dunedin. It was decided to endeavour to arrange Miss Violet MacMillan’s tour with the fireless cooker until later on in the year, just before harvest time. A letter was received from the Winter Show committee with regard to institute bays at the show, and it was decided to circularise institutes.

Mrs W. Deans reported on a meeting of the National Council of Women regarding the establishment of a training college for domestic workers. Mrs A. Morten reported on the Sunlight League meeting, and was elected as the federation’s delegate to attend committee meetings. The following group conveners were elected:—Cheviot, Mrs Struthers; Hawarden, Mrs Page: Malvern, Mrs P. A. Turner; Southbridge, Mrs Bennett; Templeton, Mrs H. Meyer; Banks Peninsula. Mrs Thelning; Omihi Valley, Mrs T, D. Mac Donald; and Loburn, Mrs Corcoran. Arrangements to collect articles for the exhibition were left in the hands of Mrs Ross Mac Donald, quite a good collection having been promised

TENNIS CLUB’S DANCE

At the annual dance held by the Lake Coleridge Tennis Club, many enjoyed dancing to the music of Mr Frank Geoghegan’s Orchestra. Mr G. Clancy was master of ceremonies.

Cups won during the year were presented by Mr G. Clancy (club captain) to Mrs James and Mr Worsdale. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss A. Dymock and Mr Fisher, and a lucky spot waltz by Miss A. Dymock and Mr Thompson. Competitions were won by Mr Cameron, and Mr Brundell, and dance extras were played by Mr M. Karatai and Mr H. Woods.

The annual social and dance of the Sydenham Public Library was held in the Sydenham Football Hall and proved an outstanding success, more than 200 guests being present. Novelty dances were won by Mr and Mrs Patti, Mr and Mrs Dacre, and Miss Mullalby and partner. Items were given by Mrs Swan, Messrs Swan, D. McGill, J. Hood, L. Cummings, and Clarke, and Robert’s “patter comedians.’’ Peter Bryson’s Band provided the music, and Mr R. Harris was master of ceremonies.

Mr W. Smith (president) presented the prizes to the winners of competitions.
