fire brigade holds ANNUAL MEETING |ZBE PRESS Special Service. l HOKITIKA, June 18. The annual meeting of the Hokitika Volunteer Fire Brigade was held with Superintendent J. J. Mclntosh presiding. The balance-sheet showed receipts for the year £79 Is 2d and expenditure £74 2s 9d, leaving a credit balance of £l6 Is 8d compared with £ll 3s 3d for the previous year. There was an outstanding liability of £24. The superintendent reported that the brigade had had five calls during the year. Hopes for a new fire station had not been realised, but the Fire Board had established a building fund of £4OO with a promised annual increase of about £IOO, so that a new building should be possible before long. A letter from Mr Mclntosh forwarding his resignation as superintendent was considered. In it he said he had been a member of the brigade for 35 years, and felt the time had arrived for him to relinquish office. The secretary (Mr Lakin) also forwarded his resignation after 17 years in that office. In response to earnest requests of members both men consented to accept office for a further term and were reelected. Deputy-Superintendent L. S. Ross and all of last year’s officers were re-elected. Personal Constable R. C. Drummond, who has been stationed at Kanieri for about 15 years, has received notice of his transfer to Oxford. Plunket Society The Hokitika Plunket Society held a bring-and-buy afternoon at the rooms yesterday in aid of funds. There was a satisfactory response to the appeal. Obituary The death took place at the Westland Hospital this morning of Mrs Ingles, wile of Mr John Ingles, of Ruatapu. Mrs Ingles, who was born in G.asgow 74 years ago, had been a resident of New Zealand for a long period.* She is survived by her husband and two daughters, Mrs Burrowes, of Ahaura and Mrs Harn, of Nelson, and six sons, Messrs William Ingles (Cobden), Walter Ingles (Kumara), Oliver Ingles (Hororata), Norman Ingles (Rimufi and George and John Ingles (Ruatapu). Coxall presided at the weekly meeting of the Inangahua Rugby League Sub-Centre, when arrangements for the representative matches were made. E. 'j'opp was appointed captain of the junior team and C. Rodden vice-captain, and W. Churstain was appointed vice-captain of the senior team. Messrs C. Coxall and C. Chandler were appointed managers of the senior and junior teams respectively. It was resolved to submit the names of the following referees to the West Coast Centre for selection for the representative matches: —Messrs A. McElwee, J. Quinn, J. Tibbies, and J. Auld, who was absent because of illness, was passed at the monthly meeting of the Reefton District High School Committee. The headmaster reported that the roll in the secondary department was 49, and the average attendance 40.6; primary department roll number was 170 and the average attendance 157.1. The dental nurse reported that operations totalled 98 for the month and the attendances were 36. Pupils had been treated from the Reefton, Convent, and Black’s Point schools. It was decided that Arbor Day be observed by the slanting of trees to beautify the school grounds. Personal Mr J. Dellaca has left for Ashburton, where he has been transferred to the bianch of the Bank of New Zealand. There was a large and representative attendance at the band room when a social was given to Mr J. Dellaca, who has been transferred to Ashburton. Mr C. Coxall, of the Reefton Swimming Club, Mr J. Crossman, Old Pupils’ Association, and Mr W. Pennington, Reefton Tennis Club, all referred to the sportsmanship of the departing guest. Presentations were made for the clubs, and Mr Dellaca replied. The death took place at Reefton on Wednesday of Mr Isaac Patterson, a well-known barrister and solicitor. Mr Patterson, who was in his fifty-seventh year had been ill for about three months. He was a native of Reefton, and was the fifth son of the l&te Mr and Mrs R. Patterson, pioneers of the Inangahua district. Mr Patterson was educated at the Reefton Public School, and afterwards attended Victoria College. He graduated at the Otago University. He began practice in Reefton 30 years ago. Mr Patterson was closely connected with all movements for the advancement of Reefton, being at various times president of the Reefton Chamber of Commerce and Reefton School of Mines. He was trustee of the Reefton gymnasium, as well as a member of the New Zealand Law Society. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and three daughters, as well as seven brothers and three sisters.
