The Dominion Observatory's weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough. issued at. 5 and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: .to strong southwesterly winds. Weather cold and changeable, with passing showers in many places, and some hall. Seas rough. The following is the Dominion forecast:— Changeable and squally weather, with showers in most districts. Hail probable on parts of the coastal areas of the South Island, and snow on the ranges. Temperatures cold. A rather vigorous depression of the westerly type has been, crossing the Dominion today, and an anti-cyclone extends from Australia over the north Tasman sea on to the northern districts.

Winds—Westerly at first north of Farewell Spit and Kaikoura; southwesterlies thence southwards, and extending shortly over most of the Dominion; moderate to strong generally, and of gale force at places. Seas (New Zealand waters)— Rough on the West Coast and off-shore south of Castlepoint; moderate north of Castlepoint. but rising off-shore. Eastern Tasman—Moderate to strong south-west winds, with rather rough to rough seas, CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER After a period of sunshine in the city during the morning a south-west wind gathered force, bringing showers of rain towards the end of the afternoon. The maximum temperature was 57.3 degrees, and the rainfall for the 24 hours ended at 1 a.m. to-day was £1.6 inches. At 1 o’clock this morning the weather was clear, with a breeze from the south-west. The temperature was 36 degrees. The barometer, rising steadily, registered 29.95 inches. IN OTHER PLACES Auckland—The weather was squally yesterday. There was a fresh westerly wind, with several light showers. Temperatures were mild, and the barometer remained steady about 29.90 inches.

Wellington—The weather was brilliantly fine, with a moderate to strong north-westerly wind. The minimum temperature on Wednesday night was 42.0 degrees; the maximum yesterday was 57.0 degrees. Dunedin—The weather yesterday was dull and threatening, with cold temperatures. There was a fresh breeze from the south-west. The barometer rose throughout the day.
