CARNEGIE GIFT PRESENTED

BANGIORA HIGH SCHOOL ( GATHERING The gift of art teaching equipment made by the Carnegie Corporation of n New York was formally handed over c to the board of governors of the t Rangiora High School by the pnnci- \ pal (Mr J- E. Strachan) at a function c at the school yesterday afternoon. The I chairman of the board (Mr C. L Jen- 1 i lings) presided, and there were pre- { TO. Mayor (Mr C. W. Tyler). ' members erf the board, of the Parents and Pupils’ Associations, representatives of the* Canterbury Progress | League, of Canterbury University Col- : lege, and of the Christchurch Tram- i ing College, and parents and residents 1 of Rangiora. , J Congratulatory messages were read i from Mr F. W. Johnston (president of i the Progress League), Mr Norton Fran- , eis (of the corporation’s New Zealand , Advisory Committee), the Mayor of ! Christchurch (Mr J. W. Beanland), ■ Dr. J. Hight (rector of Canterbury Col- j lege), Mr F. A. Shurrock ‘ (School of , Art), Mr J. A. Bigg (architect of the , Canterbury Education Board), and Mr H. T. O. Pulley (chairman of the Ash- i iey County Council). Mr Strachan said that the gift was made after the visit of Dr. Keppel < (president of the corporation) to the school early last year, and the equipment was similar to that in some other schools in the Dominion. It consisted of 130 volumes on all departments of fine arts, 13 large reproductions of paintings, more than 1000 smaller reproductions in black and white and colours, and* several portfolios. “I will be very disappointed if the use of this most valuable asset to our school life does not extend beyond the pupils. It should help us to realise our ambition to make the school the educational and cultural centre of the community, adult as well as juvenile, said Mr Strachan. He outlined Andrew Carnegie’s aim in forming philanthropic trusts and, in handing the gut to the board, made suggestions regarding the future custodianship of it The collection should be kept in the school buildings and be always available for the use of those who belonged to the school. Special responsibility for it should be taken by a committee of trustees, consisting of the chairman of the board, the principal, the Mayor, the president of the Parents’ Association, and the president of the school council To represent the citizens, he would suggest the nomination of a trustee by each of the board, the Borough Council, and the Parents’ A qq/vifli i on knows it is greatly privlleged to receive the gift,” said Mr Jennings, “and appreciates the great value and possibilities of it. Our need is a library and assembly hall for the housing of the equipment” He assured Mr Strachan that the board would do its best to fulfil "the ideals behind the gift. Addressing the meeting, Professor J. Shelley stressed the great responsibilities resting on the school to see that the collection was used properly. Man was too materially minded and his spiritual mind had to be stimulated. He-was always reaching out to try to express that which was living within him, and this had to be encouraged. The artistic side was the true approach : , tO education, and the collection would serve as a wetederful stimulus to the creative ability of both children and adults. To meet increasing needs, the collection must grow, both materially and in the minds of the people. Pro- , lessor Shelley said the value of the ’ gift was between £ISOO and £2OOO.
