Mr Justice Northcroft is attending a sitting of the Court of Appeal in Wellington. Mr H. G. Livingstone returned from Wellington by the Maori yesterday morning. Mr C. H. Clibborn, secretary to the Lyttelton Harbour Board, left last evening for Wellington on business for the board. Mr J. Hargest, M.P., was a passenger by the Maori from Wellington yesterday. The Hon. J. Goodall, M.L.C., arrived from Wellington yesterday. * Mr L. J. Schmitt, general manager of the Departments of Industries and Commerce and Tourist and Publicity, was a passenger from Wellington yesterday. Mr Edwin Feldwick, of Aikman’s road, an early settler in Canterbury, celebrates his eighty-fifth birthday to-day. Mr G. L. Pomfret-Dodd was last night elected president of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society. The City Engineer (Mr A. R. Galbraith) will return from Dunedin to-day after attending a meeting of the New Zealand Town Planning Institute. Mr C. E. Jones, who recently resigned from membership of the Christchurch City Council because of ill-health, returned to Wellington yesterday by the Mataroa after a visit to England. The Mayor (Mr J. W. Beanland) left for Wellington last evening to attend a meeting convened by the Minister for Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry) to consider further the arrangements for the commemoration of New Zealand’s centenary in 1940. He will return to Christchurch to-morrow morning. The Rev. C. F, Andrews, of India, who is at present in Christchurch On behalf of the University Mission, was the guest of members of the staff of Canterbury University College at a morning tea held in his honour in the Students’ Association building yesterday. Appreciation of the services of Mr S. Irwin Crookes, who retired from the council of Auckland University College this month, was expressed by the president, Mr T. U. Wells, at the last meeting of the council. Mr Wells said that Mr Crookes had been a most valuable member of the council, and had done outstanding work for the School of Engineering. If the college did retain that department, it would be mainly through his efforts on its behalf. His knowledge of engineering and building construction had always been at the service of the college.

Mr W. I. Deavoll, at present private secretary to the Minister for Education, has been appointed secretary to the Wellington Education Board in succession to Mr E. S. Hylton who is retiring. Mr Deavoll has been in the public service for 30 years, and has served with six successive Ministers for Education as private secretary.—Press Association.
