OLD GIRLS* ASSOCIATION At the annual meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Columba College Old Girls’ Association held last night in the Federation of University Women’s Club rooms, Montreal street, Mrs G. R. P. Beadel presided. The annual report, read by the secretary, stated that the year had been a very successful one, and four new members had been enrolled. Various functions arranged by the committee had helped old girls of the college to keep in touch with another, and maintain their interest in the college. Miss Mavis Reese was elected president, and other officers appointed were: —Vice-presidents, Mrs Lance Jewell and Mrs W. A. C. McDonald; secretary. Miss Enid Orr, treasurer, Miss Noeline Benjamin; committee, Mesdames G. R. P. Beadel, Eric Trist, E. H. Watkins, and Miss Marjorie Sharp. A. J. WHITE, LTD. STAFF DANCE The popularity of staff dances during recent years has induced the staff members of A. J. White, Ltd,, to resume their annual dance, and that this decision has been a wise one was shown by the evident enjoyment l of the guests at the dance held last night at the Winter Garden. A model bungalow occupying one corner of the ballroom served to remind the guests of the occupations of their hosts and hostesses, and .coloured lights and greenery were also employed in the decorative scheme.

Novelty items given by Messrs H. Plummer, F. Leathwick, and D. Dawson, and demonstration dances by Mr and Mrs Sydney HoUis, added interest to the evening’s programme, and music was supplied by the Bailey-Marston orchestra.

As their honoured guests the staff had invited the manager of the firm, Mr R. A. Beveridge, and Mrs Beveridge. The latter was wearing a trained frock of raisin brown panne velvet, the neckline being softenea with a bow of the velvet caught in the centre with brilliant clips, mid a fold of fine beige lace. Miss Phyllis Palmer, Messrs E. H. Davies, H. Ford, K. Plummer, and F. Lcathwick (honorary secretary) were members of me efficient organising committee. Miss Palmer wore a frock of lilac georgette shirred to a round shoulder yoke, the centre back panel of the skirt being also shirred, and a novel silver belt at the waist matched the j silver sequins trimming the shoulders. CARD PARTY ' Members of the Christchurch branch of the Timaru High School Old Girls' Association held a successful card party in the Federation of University Women’s Club rooms. Lexicon and bridge were played, the winner of the lexicon being Miss Jean Hay, and Mrs Robinson and Mr Howard won the bridge prizes. Among those present were Miss G. Hammond, Miss I. Crawford, Mrs M. ANNUAL BALL The ballroom of the Frascati was effectively decorated last evening for the second annual ball of the staff of the Osborne Gas Stove Company, Ltd. Multi-coloured lights set in festoons of greenery, greenery round the pillars, clusters of balloons and streamers hanging from the ceiling, and on the orchestral dais a miniature lighthouse which blinked convincingly, all contributed to the gay effect. A large number of guests of honour were invited to this dance, those present being Mrs W. H. Cattell, Mr and Mrs Bernard Banks, Mr and Mrs Charles Bryant, and a party representing the Christchurch Gas Company included Mr and Mrs F. W. J. Belton, Mr and Mrs G. F. Tamplin, Mr and Mrs E. O. Ball, Mr and Mrs C. Hill, and Mr and Mrs F. Hanham. Bouquets were presented to Mrs Cattell, who wore a black satin frock and a black coat heavily embroidered in white, and to Mrs Banks, whose black matalasse frock was interwoven with silver and finished at the high neck with a gathered frill of silver lame. June, Iris, and Douglas Shepherd gave a staircase tap-dancing trio, which was greatly enjoyed, and Mr W. Toomey also entertained the guests with songs. Mr R, Piper’s band supplied the music.
