DIVIDED BELGIUM
An Internal Quarrel During the war of 1914-18 a quarrel that had been going on for some time between the Flemings and the Walloons (a French-speak-ing Belgian) was embittered by the action of a group of Flemings who worked with the Germans to form an independent Flemish
state under German protection. This quarrel has again become important. Since the war the Flemings had a measure passed making the Flemish tongue an official language. They have also succeeded in carrying Flemish influence into the University of Ghent. It is suggested that there is strong Nazi influence in the northern part of Belgium today. Here the Flemings, who call themselves the Flemish Nationalists in politics, wish to separate the north from the south, making the north a new Netherlands state of Holland, and leaving the French-speaking Belgians of the south free to join France. The Flemings have demanded financial independence of the south of Belgium. They disapprove of the fortifications proposed for the eastern frontier.
