WEDNESDAY (Before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M.)

LABOUR DEPARTMENT CHARGE John James Hall, a sawmiller, was fined £ 1 on a charge that being an occupier of a factory he failed to show in a time and wages book the hours worked by his employees, and was fined a further £1 for employing a youth without giving him an annual increase in pay. Mr J. T. Watts represented the defendant, who pleaded guilty. The defendant, Mr Watts said, had left the keeping of the wages book entirely to an employee. SALE OF MILK George Young, for selling milk for human consumption from an unregistered dairy, was fined £2 and ordered to pay costs. Mr T. A. Coulter appeared for the Department of Agriculture. TAKING TROUT Freeman Graham Holmes and John Powell, each of whom was represented by Mr A. A. McLachlan, were t fined 20s for taking brown urout from the Doyleston drain. Mr M. J. Gresson represented the Acclimatisation Society. PARADISE DUCK TAKEN William Thomas Mortland, Arthur George Taylor and W. A. Wilson (each represented by Mr E. C. Champion), were each fined 20s for taking paradise duck out of season. THEFT CHARGE Joseph Edward Johns, charged with the theft of 7s 6d from Robert French, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within six months, to refund the money, and to pay expenses. The magistrate said he would extend leniency to the accused, who was probably drunk at the time the money was taken. RECORD NOT KEPT Elizabeth Thomas, a second-hand dealer, was fined £5 for failing to make an entry about the purchase of a blanket. Deteclive-Sergeant T. E. Holmes said that the woman had caused the police much trouble in not keeping proper records. The defendant had taken a blanket, sold in the first place to her, to another second-hand dealer. She had previously been warned. The magistrate said that if it happened again the defendant would lose her license. NEW BRIGHTON CASES In cases brought by the New Brighton Borough Council, offenders were fined and ordered to pay costs as follows; — Cycling on the Footpath—Stanley Austin, 10s; Frederick Bennett, 10s; Grace Bowden, costs only; Sydney Dakin, costs only; Margaret Nicholson. 10s; Robert Pepper, 10s; William Rogers, 20s; Laurie Scott, convicted and discharged; Mabel Wright, 10s. Cycling Without a Light—Jack Teichert, 10s; William P. Richardson, costs only. Failing to Register a Dog—Leonard M. Voller, convicted and discharged. CLAIM FOR WORK DONE (Before Mr F. F. Reid. S.M.) The hearing of a case in which W. K. Bunc;, engineer, of Christchurch (Mr W. F. Tracy), claimed from A. J. Bastin, merchant, of Nelson, and from Mrs Bastin in her separate estate, £153 2s for work done in the defendant’s factory and dairy, was continued. Mr J. P. Hayes, of Nelson, for defendants. claimed a non-suit in the case against Mrs Bastin, on the ground that no cause of action had been shown against her. The magistrate reserved his decision. KAIAPOI (Before Mr H. A. Young, S.M.) Winifred T. Barker, charged with having driven a motor-car at a speed which might have beer* dangerous to the public, was fined 30s, and was ordered to pay costs.
