WOMAN KILLED
ACCIDENT ON MAIN SOUTH ROAD THREE CARS INVOLVED IN COLLISION One young woman was killed and another seriously injured in a motor collision on the Main South road near Winslow, Ashburton, at 7.40 last evening. The woman killed was Miss Mary Emily Lowe, aged 27, daughter of Mr and Mrs W. T. Lowe, “Clarendon,” Hinds. The woman injured was Mrs G. H. Farrell, of Hinds, sister of Miss Lowe, who received a fracture of the skull, and was admitted to the Ashburton Public Hospital in a serious condition. The two women were travelling north in a car driven by their brother, Mr Thomas Peter Lowe, who also had with him his father and mother and Miss Watson, of Hinds. The second car involved was driven by DeLacy Cameron, of Timaru, traveller for the Kaiapoi Woollen Company, Ltd., who was travelling south alone. Cameron’s car was first deflected from its course in a slight collision with a third car driven by William H. Simmons, of Lowcliffe, who was going north. Swinging out Cameron’s car struck the car driven by Lowe, who was travelling behind Simmons. The whole of the right side of Lowe’s vehicle was stripped off, and it was swung round into a fence. Miss Lowe was sitting in the back seat on the damaged side, with Mrs Farrell beside her, and they received the full force of the impact. They were rushed in an ambulance to the hospital. It is thought that Miss Lowe’s death was almost instantaneous. LEG CRUSHED UNDER BOGEY WHEELS N. W. Noonarf. of 5 Pavitt street, Richmond, had a leg crushed under the bogey wheels of an engine at the Addington workshops yesterday afternoon, and was admitted to the Public Hospital.
