Public Works Although there are still 40 men engaged on the road improvements at Omoto, 16 men were put oft last week, and are seeking new employment. Ten youths, residents of Runanga, have been placed on road improvement work at the Seventeen Mile bluff, on the Greymouth-Westport coastal road, and others will be added to the party at an early date. Unusual Accident Although without serious consequences, an unusual type of accident occurred in Mawhera quay yesterday morning. A trailer, which was being drawn behind a timber lorry, suddenly broke free, and mounted on to the footpath, carrying away two verandah posts in front of a butcher’s shop, and coming to rest against the doorway of another shop a little further on. Placement Scheme Under the employment placement scheme in Greymouth, 22 men have been given State work, 13 in permanent private employment, and two on part-time work. The number of men registered with the Greymouth Employment Bureau, verified and opep for employment, is 97. Personal Two very old residents of Greymouth, Mr and Mrs Charles Catlin, Tainui street, celebrated their golden wedding on Sunday last. They spent a quiet day, only intimate friends being present to convey their congratulations. Mr P. J-. Bcdwell, of the Public Trust Department, Greymouth, has received notice of transfer to Wellington, and' he will be replaced by Mr R. T. Burt, of the Wellington office. Mr R. S. Cochrane, train-running officer at Greymouth, will leave soon on transfer to Frankton Junction, and will be replaced by Mr A. Croft, of Addington. Mr G. "Kirkpatrick and Miss A) Kirkpatrick left to-day for Christchurch. Mr and Mrs J. Butler, Invercargill, are visiting Greymouth. Mr and Mrs E. Collett, Napier, are visiting Greymouth. Mr C. A. Legg. stationmaster at Greymouth. returned to-day from Christchurch, from annual leave. Miss Mabel Stevens left last evening on return to Dunedin.

HOKITIKA WESTLAND RUGBY SUB-UNION [THE PRESS Special Service.] HOKITIKA, June 16. The weekly meeting of the Westland Rugby Sub-Union was held last evening, with Mr J. C. Stafford presiding. The lighting of a part of Cass Square was again discussed, and it was resolved to speed up the erection of four lights. Fixtures approved for next Satuiday were;— Senior: Pirates v. Cobden, Cass Square No. 1 (Mr J. Rutland). Junior grade: Kiwi v. School, Cass Square, 1.30 p.m. (Mr R, Collett); Ross v. Kokatahi, at Ross (Mr D. Head); Pirates v. Excelsior, at Woodstock (Mr H. Gale); Arahura a bye. Third grade: Excelsior v. Pirates, Cass Square, 1.30 p.m. (Mf* H. Staines]; Ross v. School, Cass Square, 3 p.m. (Mr J. Coulson). Golf The medal match played by the Hokitika Golf Club during the weekend resulted in a win for Millner, 91, 24—67. Other scores were: Gower, 83, 10—73; Brown, 99, 24 —75; Reese, 99, 24 —75; Ecclesfield, 98, 21—77; Andrewes, 92, 14—78; Pain, 86, 8—78; Routledge, 100, 21—79. Loan for Water Supply The Hokitika Borough Council has received the sanction of the Loans Board to borrow 'the sum of £IB,OOO for renewing the water supply pipes in the borough and the pipes of the reservoir. The proposed security is the pledging of a special rate of 2|d in the £ ,on unimproved value of rateable property within the borough. The term of the loan will be 36 years. A poll of ratepayers on the proposal will be taken on July 15. School Jubilee A meeting has been called of all old pupils of the Hokitika ‘School, both primary and secondary departments, for making arrangements for the school jubilee.
