COUNTY COUNCIL PICTON-GROVE HIGHWAY DISCUSSED [THE PRESS Special Service.! BLENHEIM, June 14.. The monthly meeting of the Mari* borough County Council was hda recently. A motion of; sympathy was pas&d with the relations of Mr Geo, Boyce. A letter was received from the Picton Borough Council about the proposed conference when the apportioning of cost of maintenance of the Pic-ton-Grove highway was to be discussed, in which they suggested tost the conference be postponed until the Government’s policy relating to the main highways had been clarified. It was agreed that the council accept the offer of the Minister for Public Works of a grant of £2 to £1 towards the cost of building a traffic bridge over the Taylor river at Burleigh, and we engineer (Mr B. Hundleby) was instructed to prepare plans. The Blenheim Borough Council will also he informed that the council had cepted this offer, the estimated cos* of erection being £7OOO, of which onethird was to be provided by the interested local bodies, and that as the bridge was a connecting link between the borough and county, the council expected them to contribute one hall of the local body’s proportion. The Marlborough Hospital Board advised that the approximate amount that would be required from the council would be £3788 18s 4d, for maintenance, and £391 4s for capital expenditure, and it was decided to the first instalment of the levy. The engineer’s report disclosed that on the gold mining scheme, 125 men h*“ been engaged during the month. The gold returns for the month were:--’ Wakamarina area, 25$ ounces; North Bank. 7$ ounces, a total of 33 ounces. Community Drama Competition The Marlborough Federation Womens’ Institutes held its annual community drama competition u* His Majesty’s Theatre, Seven branches had entered, and day sessions Wpe held so that four plays could be aetected for the evening performance*. jßj® judge, Mrs Bernard Beeby, of Cbxj»~ church, had no easy task in makjnf her selection. The awards were announce* by the judge as follows:—Blenheim centre 1, Seddon 2, Havelock Suburb* o 3. and Picton 4. The silver trophy was presented to the winning tea® by the Mayor, Mr J. Gray, a OO Misses Gibson, and J. March Returned Soldiers’ Association An executive meeting of the Marlborough Returned Soldiers’ Association was held, when the president. Mr E. J. Brammall, was appointed delegate to the annual conference of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, which will be held at Weilington soon, and the secretary, Mr ’ L. A, Curry, was authorised to accompany Mr Brammall if availableIt was decided to hold the annual reunion on August 22. Collie Dog Trials There was an entry of 58 dogs for the Marlborough Collie Dog Club* second event in the annual trials, the heading, bringing back, and hoWto* in the ring contest Mr J.
