MEAT KILLINGS FOR EXPORT

HEAVY DECLINE IN EWES LAMBS LITTLE LOWER THAN LAST YEAR With the dosing of South Island works toward the end of this month the export meat season is practicaliy at a close. The season started most unpromisingly, but the latest figures supplied by the Meat Producers’ Board show that with the exception of ewes, production has in most classes of meat been kept up fairly well. It looked at cue time as though the lamb shipments. from the Dominion would be very much below those of last year, but the latest figures give killings at 8,255,322 carcases, against 8 281 986 for the corresponding period last year, a difi'erencc by no means as marked as was expected earlier. The lamb figures have been considerably heiped by the drier weather of May, and ;iho by the consistently good season that has been enjoyed in the southern part ot the South Island. The most significant decline is in the oxoort of owes, which hcivo dropped to 662,793 this year from 1,103,681 last year, a decline of 440,888 carcases, of which the decline m North Island shipments was responsible for 344,429 C3VC9SCS The figures show rather strikingly the turnover in the North Island from frozen to chilied beef. This trade grew from 37,895 quarters last year to 104,124 quarters in the year about to cioso. There was a corresponding di op in the trade in frozen beef, which declined from 248.334 quarters to 100,431. The killings of pigs have also shown a most satisfactory increase, porkers having risen by 25.050 caicascs and baconers by 68.754. ...... The following tables give the killings at all New Zealand works for export from October 1, 1935, to May 31, 1936 with the figures for the corresponding period in the previous season:

Ltd., a company with a capital of £50,000, to undertake the manufacture in Christchurch of modern hosiery for men and women, has been issued. The company has taken over as a going concern the Selwyn Hosiery Manufacturing Company, Ltd., and by additions to the plant of this company, and extension into new lines, will exploit the New Zealand market. Capital is divided into £40,000 £1 ordinary shares and £IO,OOO £l6 per cent, cumulative preference shares. Of the ordinaries, 3600 have been issued as fully paid to the vendor company, 20,000 are offered to the public, and 16,400 will be held in reserve. To holders of preference shares m the vendor company, 2500 fully paid preference shares in the new company will be issued, and the remaining 7500 will be offered to the public. The company has bought the latest machinery for the manufacture of fully-fashioned hose, and is the first in New Zealand to install this type of plant. The venture will have the advantage of having taken over the sales organisation of Selwyn Hosiery, which has traded very successfully for eight years. There will, therefore, be no need for heavy expenditure on such things as buildings, as the new enterprise is more in the nature of an expansion of a business that has earned good profits up to the present. Assets, which include factory premises, plant and machinery, stock, and book debts, have been taken over at a reasonable figure, and no payment has been made for goodwill. Immediate capital needs are set out at £II,OOO for additions to the present building, and instalment of additional plant. Estimated profits are £5389 a _ rospects for New Zealand manufacturing concerns under the present Government are good. The directors are Messrs H. F. Herbert, W. C. Fairbrother. H. C. C. Govan, H G. Helmore, and F. G. Joyce, ah of Christchurch. The brokers are Hamilton and Hamilton.
