M.E.D. CHARGES

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir, —May one offer congratulations to the Municipal Electricity Department on the low prices now being charged for electricity. Only a very small proportion of towns in the world have electricity available for lighting and domestic purposes at such low rates. To reach the present pricelevel in an unusually widespread town such as Christchurch, and yet keep down the overhead charges to consumers as well as the rate a unit, is probably a unique achievement. Those who wonder why the price was not reduced before, or is not lower still, should remember that even the present good credit balance would not suffice to provide free electricity to consumers for more than a very short space of time.—Yours, etc., CONSUMER. June 12. 1936.
