ROWING
N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS AKAROA TO APPLY FOR NEXT YEAR’S EVENTS A decision to forward a guarantee to the Canterbury Rowing Association, that they would finance the 1937 New Zealand rowing championships at Akaroa, if this was acceptable to the New Zealand Rowing Association, was made at a meeting of the Akaroa Regatta and Boating Clubs, at which the Mayor, Mr F. R. E. Davis, commodore of the Akaroa Regatta Club, presided. All present were unanimous to have the championships, if possible, at Akaroa, as it was considered that it would be a fitting way in which to celebrate the jubilee of the Akaroa Boating Club, which was started in 1387. The chairman said that about £2OO would be required (prize money £l6O, and expenses £4O). The entrance fees at the recent championship regatta, in Wellington, amounted to £6O. He reported upon the deputation which waited upon th£ Canterbury Rowing Association in Christchurch. A deputation consisting of the commodore. Messrs L. J. Vangioni, D. C. M. Reid, and W. E. M. Jacobson was appointed to wait upon the Akaroa Borough, Akaroa County, and Wairewa County Councils, asking for financial help. The commodore and Messrs J. E. Armstrong, W. W. Reid, L. J. Vangioni, and D. C. M. Reid were appointed to canvass the Akaroa district for promises of support towards the regatta funds. The commodore and Messrs L. J. Vangioni and W. E. M. Jacobson were left to draw up a circular setting out the advantages of Akaroa harbour for holding the championship regatta, to be sent to all New Zealand rowing clubs. Arrangements were also made to procure information about the best rowing courses of two miles, one and a half miles, and one mile, and also to the best means of transporting boats.
