COMMUNITY SINGING RESUMED

RECORD FOR OPENING OF SEASON Although the attendance was noi large, the first gathering of the 1936 community singing season in the Civic Theatre yesterday established a record for the takings were £2l Os 2d, more than at the first gathering of any previous season. The enthusiasm of those who did attend compensated for the numerical smallness. At the opening of the season the Mayor, Mr J. W. Beanland, appealed to the singers to improve even on the success oi last yeav. The sessions, he said, were held primarily to provide amusement for the people who attended them. Mr Beanland also thanked those who had assisted in starting the season so well. The song leader, Mr W. McNair, was in good form, and alternated choruses and stories. He also read a letter from last season’s pianist, Mr H. E. Goodland, now of Wellington, to whom a “cheerio” was sent. Mr Goodland suggested that Mr Beanland should follow the precedent established by the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, by giving a * lo during the year, and he referred to the ability of his successor at the piano. Mr F. Squire. A number of popular items were given by Messrs Colin and John Campbell.
