WELLINGTON, June 10. Mr S. B. Ward, second officer of the Tamahine, received serious eye injuries this afternoon when a Holmes light on a lifebuoy exploded whilp he was examining it. He was taken to a private hospital for treatment of the injury, which proved serious. The Holmes light is designed to explode and provide a flare when the lifebuoy hits the water, the chemicals used being phosphorus and acetylene. Shortly before the Tamahine was to leave Wellington for Picton, Mr Ward noticed that a Holmes light on a lifebuoy was leaking. He was bending over it when it exploded in his face. He was able to walk ashore, and after medical attention at the wharf was taken to a private hospital. To-night he is reported to be more comfortable. The Union Steam Ship Company had to find an officer to replace him before the Tamahine sailed, the vessel being nearly an hour late in departing for Picton.
