MARKETING OF FRUIT REPLY RECEIVED FROM MINISTER (THE PBESS Special Service.) NELSON. June 10. Some days ago Mr K. J. Holyoake, M.P., made representations to the. Ministers for. Industries and Commerce and for Agriculture about the unsatisfactory state of the small-fruit industry in the Motueka electorate, with special rMerence to the disorganisation ists. Since re contract system went out of existence growers have not * known what quantity of fruit was veouired in any year, and t-h» s had led to unpayable returns to the producer. * The Minister has replied to Mr Holyoake as follows: "About your enquiry as to the present position of the \ proposed investigation into the marketing of fruit and what methods may'be adopted to improve the existing conditions, I have to advise that Mr J. Thomas; of my department, Mr : J. Campbell, of the Department of Agriculture, with Mr J. S. Barton as chair- * man, have been appointed a committee to enquire into all phases of marketing of fruit in New Zealand. Mr Barton is leaving within the next day or so for Auckland, and will malm Preliminary enquiries in conjunction with the district officer of the department. A conference will be held on Tuesday to consider the most effective means of conducting an enquiry, and will then begin hearing evidence from ihe growers, merchants, and retailers. Your representations for the small fruit jgrowers in your district will receive careful consideration, and will possibly result in a committee visiting that area to obtain first-hand information.'' 'Personal Mr Francis Harman Dwyer, -q£> Tasman street, to-day celebrated hu ninetieth birthday. Mr K, Davis, of the staffof thd Nelson branch of the Bank of New south Wales, has be«i transferred to Christchurch. Mr Davis is a member of the Nelson Golf Club and the Nelson Anglers' Club. Mr D. W. Jackson, of Wellington, has been appointed to fill the vacancy. . The staff of the Labour Department | met this meaning to say good-bye to < Mr J. Mclvor, who is leaving this evening on promotion to Hamilton, where 1 he will occupy the position of district inspector of factories. Mr B. Bell, district employment officer, for the staff, j. made the presentation to the departing t officer and to Mrs Mclvor. Opportu- * nity was also taken to welcome Mr t W, J.
