greymouth SUPREME COURT [THE PRESS Special Service.] GREYMOUTH. June 10. The quarterly sitting of the Supreme Court at Greymouth, before Mr Justice Northcroft. concluded yesterday. James Forbes, alias John James Mac Lean, aged 40, labourer, who was found guilty by a jury last week of indecently assaulting Mrs Elizabeth Rosel, at Greymouth, on the night of March 19, appeared for sentence. His Honour said that he was prepared to accept the view of the jury, that prisoner did not enter Rosel’s house in a criminal way, and that what occurred afterwards was the outcome of his drunken state. Prisoner would be released on probation for two years with the special condition that he must keep away from liquor, and take otit a prohibition order. Frederick Llewellyn Cassidy, a school teacher, of Hokitika, was granted a decree nisi against his wife, Frieda Veronica Cassidy, to be moved absolute in three months, on the grounds of desertion. In the case in which Gnffen and Smith, Ltd., merchants, Greymouth (Mr J. W. Hannan), proceeded against George Kirkpatrick, grocer (Mr T. F. Brosnan), on questions of whether Kirkpatrick owned the retail businesses carried on at Greymouth, Reefton, and Hokitika, under the name of “K’s Cash Stores,” or was merely the manager, a settlement was reached out of court.

An appeal from the decision of the Warden (Mr H. Morgan) in decreeing the forfeiture of the mining privileges of Brown’s Terrace Consolidated, Ltd., the respondent being Redmond Goldsack Honey, did not come before the court, Mr T. F. Brosnan, for the appellant company, announcing that the appeal had been abandoned. Costs, £7 7s, were allowed to respondent. A claim for £2OOO damages for the loss of a leg as the result of an accident while he was procuring timber for bridge-building purposes on May 31, 1935, at the Croesus track, near Blackball, made by Christopher Clement Briscoe, bushman, against his Majesty the King, was settled out of court. Post Office at Karoro A branch post office will soon be opened at Karoro, at the store conducted by Miss E. M, Shrives. The decision is the result of a petition received from South Beach and Karoro residents. There will be a mail delivery between the Karoro office and the Chief Post Office twice daily, but no delivery of mail will be made from the Karoro office to residents, who will be required to call. Telegrams will be dealt with only through the chief post office. Otira Tunnel Freight Last week freight hauled through the Otira tunnel, from Westland to Canterbury, amounted to 13,999 tons, the highest weekly total since 1930. In the corresponding week of last year the total was 10,'?32 tons, and in 1934, 10,129 tons. The big increase last week was due principally to increases in the amounts of coal and timber railed to Christchurch. Miner Injured A miner employed at the Liverpool State mine, Joseph Rouse, almost severed the big toe of his left foot, with an' axe, while at work in the mine yesterday morning. He was attended by Dr. W. J. Dickel, and later admitted to the Grey Hospital. His condition is satisfactory. Oddfellows’ Lodge There was a good attendance at the half-yearly meeting of the Loyal Greymouth Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., at which Bro. Allen presided. Bro. Congreve, P.D.G.tyl., installed the following officers; —Noble Grand, Bro. G. Long; vice-grand, Bro. L. B. Hutchison; elective secretary, Bro. S. L. Dumpleton; guardian, Bro J’. Dully; warden, Bro. G. Hughes. Three members were proposed for membership, and one member was installed Following the meeting a social hour was spent, suitable toasts being honoured, and items given. Personal Mr L. M. Donovan, railways clerk, Greymouth, left yesterday on transfer to Leeston. He was presented by the members of the clerical staff with a fountain pen. Miss V. hichardson, of the Greymouth telephone exchange staff, will leave to-morrow for Wellington, where she has received an appointment with the Department of Internal Affairs.

O’rtogan left yesterday on return to Wellington. _ Mr C. S. Thomas left yesterday on return to Christchurch. HOKITIKA RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION [THE PRESS Special Service.] HOKITIKA, June 10. The monthly meeting of the new executive of the Hokitika Returned Soldiers’ Association was held, with Mr W. E. Brown (president) presiding. The president introduced the subject of relief to distressed cases and asked for some direction about future disbursement of the canteen funds and poppy sale funds. It was finally decided to empower the present sub-committee adminir-ter-ing the patriotic fund to include also the poppy and canteen funds in its administration, a monthly return of the total amount disbursed to be submitted to the committee. It was decided to negotiate with Mr Dehn 'for the purchase of a piano for the hall. The date of the annual reunion was fixed for September 4. The “Girl in Red” notified that she would be in Hokitika On August 17, and the secretary was empowered to arrange an evening on that date. Headquarters advised that a national grant of £ISOO had been made by the Canteens Fund Board, of which £ls ’ is the Hokitika branch’s assessment. Two mdfnbers were proposed and elected. A grant of £5 from the Paddy’s Market fund was transferred to the Flock House fund. REEFTON LEAGUE FOOTBALL [THE PRESS Special Service.] REEFTON, June 10. Mr C. Coxall presided at the weekly meeting of the Inangahua Rugby League Sub-Centre, when advice was received from the New Zealand Council that Mr J. E. Amos, of Christchurch, had been appointed as South Island selector. Challenges for the O’Donnell Cup were received from the Waiuta and Mawheraiti Clubs and the secretary was instructed to inform the clubs that the challenge must be forwarded to the Reefton Club, the present holders of the cup. Miss Alma Hindmarsh, who was seriously injured at Hokitika in February last, is expected to be able to return to her home this week. Miss A. Bennett has returned from Christchui'ch. Word has been received of the death at Nelson of Mr J. O’Donnell, formerly a well-known resident of Inangahua Junction. Obituary The death took place at the Reefton Hospital on Tuesday morning of Mr John Schwass. who sustained serious' injuries at the Brown Creek sawmill last week. He was the second son of Mr and Mrs E. Schwass, of Hotokobu, and was 23 years of age.
