Miss Mildred Trent presided at a very well attended meeting of tne Christchurch branch of the National -Council of Women. Delegates from the following organisations were present: Womens Christian Temperance Union, Young Women’s Christian Association, Canterbury Women Teachers Association, Canterbury Mothers Union, Trained Nurses. Association, Home Economics Association, Federation of University Women, Howard League for Pen:.! Reform, Canterbury Women’s Club, Women’s branch of Citizens’ Association Ca^ Manufacturers’ Association, Womens Auxiliary, Home Service Association, Women’s Division Farmers Union, Kea Cross Society, Girls’ Friends Society. North Canterbury Federation of women’s Institutes, Christchurch Business and Professional Women s Uud, Canterbury Post and Telegraph Women’s Association, Womens branci of the Douglas« Social Credit Movement, Methodist Deaconess Committee, and Navy League. •%, Miss Trent welcomed the following new delegates: Mrs Colin Mclntosh, representing the North •' Canterbury Provincial Executive of the Women s Division of the Farmers’ Union; Mrs Herbert. Smith, Red Cross Society; Miss N. Hall, Business and Professional Women’s Club. Associate members welcomed were Mrs W. H. Cattell and Misses Comer and Maloney. It was decided to accept an mvitation to attend a meeting, under the auspices of the Douglas Social Credit Movement, when Mr D. M. Sherwood will give an address. „ _ A Miss Jean Stevenson, of the Y.W.u.a., addressed the meeting in an endeavour to interest members in helping to finance an ambassador for peace in Gentva. . Miss E. A. Chaplin (honorary treasurer) presented a satisfactory financial statement. Miss F. L. Cooper, the councils representative on the Women’s Employment Committee, presented a progress report, and Miss I. M. Jamieson reported on the work and findings of the mental deficiency sub-commit-tee. » , Miss Trent read a remit from the Howard League for Penal Reform, to the effect that in view of the hardship to women and children caused by no payment being made to the dependents of men serving prison sentences till after the first three months of imprisonment, the National Council of Women draw the attention of the Minister for Justice to the necessity for a standard amount of sustenance being paid from the date of conviction. Delegates were asked to take this remit back to their societies. Messrs J. Maling and J. Mac Gibbon waited on the council to ask its support in the effort being made to straighten out the finances of the Summit Road Trust. The sneakers were accorded a very sympathetic hearing, and were thanked by Miss Trent. As man v societies had not had the opportunity of discussing the report of the committee set up to consider the question of the raising of the status of domestic workers, it was decided that delegates should emphasise the need for this being done before the next council meeting. Mrs Kent-Johnston read the report of the obstetrical sub-committee. Drs. Bennett, Thomas, and Jennings attended, and explained the various points deajt with in the report. Miss Trent conveyed the thanks of the council to the doctors for attending and helping in this way. After a long discussion the comr.'ttee was thanked for its comprehensive and painstaking report, which was adopted.

BIRTHDAY PARTY

A pleasant evening was spent at the home of Mr and Mrs George Watson, Hills road. Marshland, to celebrate the birthday of their daughter (Mrs H. Blank). Progressive euchre was enjoyed, the winners being Mrs C. Bott and Mrs H. Blank, Mr Bott and Mrs George Watson. Mr Waugh and Miss Dora Waugh were the winners of an interesting competition. Those present were Mr and Mrs G. Watson, Mrs Blank, Miss Joy Watson, Miss June Watson, and Master lan Watson. Mr and Mrs Sydney Watson, Mr S. Watson, jun., Mr and Mrs Bott, and Mr and Mrs and Miss Waugh.

A meeting of the Linwood United Band of Hope was held in the Presbyterian School Hall, vith the Rev. A. McNeur presiding. Mrs Anstice gave an instructive address and items were given as follows: —Recitations, Joyce Harris, Alison Grigg, Shirley Finlayson. Joyce Lockhead, John Grigg, and David Stokes: vocal duet, Joy Marsden and Jean Collyer; piano solo, Ngaire Harris and John Grigg. Mrs Grigg was pianist.
