MINIATURE RIFLES

The Monday night shoot of the Kaikoura Miniature Rifle Club for the weekly silver buttons was held. Mrs R. Reardon, with a possible 70, secured the women’s button for the third consecutive week, and E. W. Harris, with a possible 70, annexed the men’s button. The scores were:— Men —A. Hansen 64, K. RETURNED SOLDIERS* REUNION

ANNUAL GATHERING AT CHEVIOT

The annual meeting of the Cheviot branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association was held in the Public Hall, recently. The president, Mr C. P. Holton, presided over a fair attendance. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £27 3s 9d, which was considered satisfactory. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows; —President, Mr C. F. Holton (re-elected); vice-president, Mr N. R. Wilkinson (re-elected); committee, Messrs G. Struthers, C., Dierck, G. B. Cooper, C. G. Abbott, D. H. Milne. J. McAdam, J. A. Auld, J. Walton, and Dr. L. H. Marshall; secretary and treasurer, Mr C. P. Holton; sub-committee, Messrs C. F. Holton, N. R. Wilkinson. G. Struthers, and C, Dierck. The following motion was carried unanimously: “It is the earnest hope of the Cheviot branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, that the notice of motion to abandon the postal vote for the election of officers to the Christchurch executive will be heavily defeated.” At the conclusion of the usual business, members stood for a moment’s silence in memory of absent comrades. and the remainder of the evening was spent socially. The following toasts were honoured: —“The King.” “Cheviot Branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association.” “Honorary Members,” and the “Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association.” the latter being represented by Messrs E. F. Willcox- and Emerson. Songs were rendered by Messrs C. Goggin, C. Sumner, G. Struthers, R. Derbridge. and humorous sketches by “Swanko."

Cheviot Collie Club A committee meeting of the Cheviot Collie Dog Club was held .in the Public Library with the president, Mr T. Wilkinson, presiding. The following recommendations were made for the incoming committee to deal with:—That a suitable building be provided for the judge; that an official be appointed as an organiser in charge of the lettihg-out committee; that the sheep for the huntaway class be held in the permanent yards, instead of the temporary yards; that a competitor steward be appointed, and that competitors carry a number on their backs, to correspond with the official programme number; that class 4 be deleted, and that district prizes be provided for district competitors, to* be run in conjunction with classes 1 and 3. The secretary submitted a draft statement of the finances of the trials, which show an estimated satisfactory profit. It was decided to close the books for the year on October 31.

ST. PAUL’S CHURCH AT GLENMARK

ANNUAL MEETING OF PARISHIONERS

The annual meeting of parishioners was held recently in the vicarage. The balance-sheets of general account and cemetery account showed a credit balance.

Church officers elected for the coming year were as follows:—Bishop’s warden, Mr E. J. Blake; parish warden, Mr T. McGuckin; vestry, Messrs R. B. Johnson, A. Stackhouse, Stokes, B. Symonds, P. King, I. Munro, Mesdames Munro, Stackhouse, Campbell, Misses A. Symonds and R. Symonds. Mr G. Sheldon was elected honorary auditor.

An honorarium of £5 was granted to the organist.

TAI TAPU PARISHIONERS

OFFICERS ELECTED FOR YEAR

The annual meeting of parishioners of St. Paul’s Church, Tai Tapu, was held recently, with the vicar (the Rev. T. M. Curnow) presiding. The annual report and balance-sheet showed a small credit balance. Offertories for the year showed a satisfactory increase. The following church officers were appointed:—Vicar’s warden, the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes; people’s warden, Mr J. J. Willan; vestry, Messrs M. M. Fleming, G. Spencer, R. Studholme, J. Newall, H. Hauschild, W, Dean, E. Stow, G. Scott, James Willan, R. J. Ware, and F. D. Cradock. Mr O. Ceilings was reappointed auditor.

AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MISS B. E. BAUGHAN ELECTED TO VACANCY

Miss B. E. Baughan was elected to fill the extraordinary vacancy on the Akaroa Borough Council, there being only the one nomination. Miss Baughan has the distinction of being the first woman to serve on the Akaroa Borough Council. Personal The Rev. H, Nelson Wright has returned to Akaroa, after a short visit to Hokitika. The Rev. David Calder, Dominion secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society, and Mr C. Marks, secretary for Canterbury and Westland, have returned to Christchurch after visiting Akaroa. Bible Society

An interesting lantern lecture showing slides chiefly illustrating Brazil, was given in the Trinity Sunday schoolroom by the Rev. David Calder, Dominion secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society and by Mr C. Marks, secretary for Canterbury and Westland. Fire Brigade The members of the Akaroa Fire Brigade held a most successful progressive euchre party in their social hall. Miss M. G. Mahon won the women’s first prize and Mr J. Truman the men’s prize. Horticultural Society

Mr F. R. E. Davis, president, presided at a meeting of the Akaroa Horticultural Society. The honorary treasurer presented a balance-sheet of -the Winter Show, which showed a debit after all accounts and prize-money had been paid. To increase interest, the president offered to try to arrange some lectures on gardening. Mr Longden said that he would like to see the society take up the work of a beautifying association. This suggestion was adopted.

WEST MELTON

Under the auspices of the West Melton School Committee, a very enjoyable social was held in the schoolroom. Competitions were won as follows:—Women: Mrs T. Summerfield 1, Miss Jean Mugford (Aylesbury) 2. Men: Mr J. Wilson (Halkett) 1, Mr R. Wilson (Halkett) 2. After supper dancing was enjoyed to music played by Mrs W. Hayes. Mr R.
