FASCISTS GAIN 21 SEATS
GENERAL ELECTION IN
BELGIUM A SOCIALIST MAJORITY (Received May 25, 10.5 p.m.) BRUSSELS, May 24.
The general election resulted in the Rexists, a new Fascist organisation, aiming at the reform of political life, gaining 21 seats from the Catholics, formerly the biggest party in the chamber. The Socialists are now the most important party in spite of losing three seats to the Communists. The results are not yet complete. The Socialists, with 70 seats, form the largest party. The Catholics have 63 seats, the Liberals 23 seats, the Rexists 21 seats, the Flemish Nationalists 16 seats, and the Communists nine seats. The Rexists, whose leader is a freelance, M. Degrelle (nicknamed “peacock), demand a clean up of national politics. Although denounced as fascists, the party does not possess a militant organisation. M. Paul Hymans (Minister without portfolio in the last Cabinet) was defeated for Brussels. It is expected that M. Adolphe Max, who has been Burgomaster since 1909, will resign i" his favour. fin the last Parliament the distribution of seals was: -Catholics .79, Liberals 24, Socialists 73. Frontists (extreme Fle.iish Nationalists) 8, Communists 3.1
