TIMBER WORKERS’ AWARD
DRAFTING OP PREFERENCE CLAUSE (PRI33 ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON. May 25. An application for a new timber workers’ award for the South Auckland, Taranaki, and Wellington districts was heard in the Arbitration Court to-day as the outcome of an agreement at conciliation proceedings at Palmerston North on May 6. Mr Read, for the North Island Timber Workers’ Federation, brought under the court’s notice the matter of compulsory unionism. He said he had been in touch with the Minister, who told him that the amended Arbitration Act would be in operation almost immediately. Mr Read informed the court that he understood the compulsory unionism clause would come into force in about one month after the passing of . the act. He , wished that clause to be embodied in the new award.
Mr Seed, representing the employers, said that those engaged in conciliation proceedings appeared to wish to leave the drafting or the preference clause .entirely to the Arbitration Court so that the clause would be In compliance with the new legislation. Mr Justice Page said that the court would take time to consider that point when the legislation went through and ~° raw U P a clause in accordance with the legislation.
