CARD ROOM IN RETURNED SOLDIERS’ CLUB
PROTEST AGAINST LOCKED DOORS
Objection to the presence of onlookers in the card rooms of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, at Jelhcoe Hall, tvas expressed by members at the meeting of the executive last evening. It was suggested by Mr W. H. Darby, in presenting the report of the billiards committee, that card players were embarrassed or prevented from concentrating by the presence of onlookers —non-players watching the games over the shoulders of the players. The president. Mr B. O, Priddis. said he had received a suggestion that a small charge should be paid by all club members on entering the card room. He considered, however, that it would be very unwise to debar any member from any part of the club building. Mr T. L. Drummond supported the president in the contention that members should net be debarred from any of the club-rooms. It. had come to his notice that the doors of the card room were cn occasions locked, and he protested strongly against this. “There is something sinister about the card rooms being locked,” he added. “Just what authority the players have for locking the doors I do not know, but I object most strongly.” The meeting went into committee to continue the discussion. It was later stated that the executive had decided to make a small charge for admission to the card room, to be paid by players and non-players alike.
