MORE VIOLENCE IN PALESTINE

Five Thousand British Troops in Country STRICTER PRECAUTIONS (UKITBD FBE3S iSSOCUTtOK— COPTBIOHT.I (Received May 24. 11,50 p.m.) JERUSALEM, May 24. The authorities are tightening up th_ measures for dealing with the Arab-Jewish tension. They have prohibited Arab strike leaders from leaving the towns in which they live. They interdicted a conference of Arab mayors. Motorists are prohibited from using the roads without permits in order to prevent terrorists carrying out motor raids, in consequence of which all road traffic is at present convoyed by troops. The train services have been reduced. Night trains have been cancelled. All trains carry a military escort.

Many shooting affrays are reported throughout the country. Incendiaries set fire to the police cricket pavilion at Nazareth. A bomb was thrown into an open air cinema, injuring two of the audience, at Haifa, where the Arab boatm n struck. There are at present 5000 British troops in Palestine, including a tank corps. Yesterday an attempt was made to set fire to the Levant fair. The Seaforth Highlanders are guarding the main points in the Holy City. The police, wearing steel helmets, are patrolling the streets. The Emir Abdullah has rebuffed Arab overtures for his support. He deprecated violence, and advised acceptance of the Royal Commission.
