Stating that his personal view was that there would be no war, Dr. N. Chaldjian. an economist and company director, who was a through passenger to Australia on the Maunganui, said at Wellington that before he sailed from London the remilitarisation of the Rhineland was expected in the City of London, although possibly not by Whitehall, which was the reason for the tremendous shock when the news came out. Dr. Chaldjian said that Germany did not owe much to the City of London at the present time. His reference was to what is called the floating commercial debt. There was, of course, the investment debt, but the floating debt was very small. He would say Bradford was the most interested because of the Australian and New Zealand wool sold to Germany.

Trawlers operating from Napier have had the worst season for 15 or 20 years as the result of the short supply of fish. Fishermen have been quite unable to meet the normal demands of the market. It is difficult to discover a definite reason for the paucity of fish netted, but one theory generally favoured is that the weather has had a great deal to do with it. The poor results obtained have meant that most of the trawlers at Port Ahuriri have continued operations practically at a loss and vessels have even been tied up because of the owners' reluctance to work them without a reasonable assurance of a margin of profit. The quantities of fish reaching the Hawke's Bay market have shown a marked drop in comparison with the totals for preceding years, but strangely enough there has not been more than a slight rise in price levels.
