SIR JOHN HALL SHIELIf

TROPHY RETAINED BY BOW HIGH SCHOOL Although there were only two schools competing for the Sir John Hall Shield last night at the Tepid Baths as compared with three last year, there Were six teams, two more than last year, entered. The competition, which is held by the Canterbury head centre of the Royal Life-Saving .Society, drew thred entries from the Christchurch Boys* High School and three from the Christchurch West High School, Each competitor must be under 17 years of age. The trophy was retained by the Christchurch Boys* High School A team, with the School C team second. Each team was examined in land drill and water work, in four of the five prescribed methods.

. Commenting on the land drill," Mr I,» A. Watkins said; "The drill on the whole was creditable and showed a good standard of work on the part of the instructors,. The weak point in all of the teams was the resuscitation drill, not enough attention being paid to turning the patients, and the backward movements were rather •slow. "There was a tendency to carelessness in the water work." said Miss D. Brown; a judge of the water work, "some of the competitors sacrificing style to speed. The standard of backstroke and breaststroke was lower than in previous years, but the object diving was considerably in*proved." The officials were:—Referee and marshal, Mr M. E.
