Duke of Gloucester Cup The New Zealand Racing Conference recently considered several apfrom South Island clubs to hcSdthe next contest tor the Duke of Gloucester Cup, given as a trophy for a race open to gentlemen riders only, and it was decided to allot the race to the Canterbury Jockey Club. The race will be included in the programme for the Grand National meeting in August. Coming to Riccarton Kinnoull is confidently expected to take his place in the Great Easter and Autumn Handicaps next month, we has done satisfactorily since he returned from Wingatui last month, where he was not able to race omn» to some side trouble, and on Saturday at the conclusion of the programme at Washdyke he was galloped a mho on the course proper, and acquitted himself well. The Pink Coat three-year-old will certainly be an interesting contestant at Riccarton, especially in the Great Autumn Handicap. Owing to L J. Ellis being absent at Ellerslie, another rider will have to be secured for him in the Great Easter, but Ellis will be on hand to ride him in the longer race. Individual Interests Nocturnus was booked to have his first race at the Birchwood Hunt meeting on Saturday, but, although schooling well at Invercargill, -n Thursday, was not produced. He is in future to race in the colours of the Hon. G. a Hunter, M.L.C.. who has taken over his lease from Mr G. Barton, Havering, who recently came to Riccarton from the North Island, wiU race in the colours of the Hon. f. Webb. From Queensland The Queensland breeder, Mr Colin Clark, is mating three of his mares, Cootharaba. Coochie Mudlow, and Barrimon, with Solicitor General at Elderslie this season. Eligible to Start • In removing Tizzy from the schooling list last week, the New Zealand Racing Conference stipulated that she must be placed on the outside of, or behind, the field at the start of a Under a section of the rule governing the schooling list a horse, •whose name appears on the list, is not eligible to start in any flat race, but although Tizzy was nominated for the Great Autumn Handicap while she was on the list, the removal of the ban by the conference has made ber eligible to carry out her engagement It is understood that the Riccarton meeting will be her last appearance in-public, for West Coast Meetings Carfex has been sold to Mr Davis, of Ross. Westland, and was shipped to his new home last week. Carfex vMtst missed being a top-notcher. He Showed very good form and won Plenty of races until he became affected in the wind. ;J)eath of Nnkumai’s Sire '% Manchineel was destroyed at Wav--Orley last week, at the age of 24 years. With limited opportunities, this *ori of Maniopoto and Eduam sired Jtiany useful performers, including the ■Versatile Nukumai, Miss Hushabye. Jpikimai, Lupineel, and several others. 'Owing to an injury he sustained as yearling, Manchineel was never ■graced, but although he was hardly On outstanding, success at the stud he 3ias proved a wonderful aid to the improvement of the standard of hunters :U South’ Taranaki. Incidentally, the veteran Nukumai, now rising 17, is spending his days in retirement at •Waverley without being greatly affected by the passage of time. On the r! he showed wonderful form, even the veteran stages of his career, •and is still carrying his age remarkably well. Sbverdae Win « The grey Hunting Song gelding Grand Sport, winner of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Stewards’ Handicap the year before last, who has been a disappointment this season in Australia, frad an overdue success in the Flying Handicap, five furlongs and a half, at ihe Woodend (Victoria) meeting on Jdarch 16, He carried only 7-10. It iforas not a very profitable victory, the 'Winner’s share of the stake being only ,s£3o. Paralysing Bun •* Just when Mollysharman, the favourite, appeared to have the first division of the Wilgena Two-year-old, at .the South Australian Amateur Turf jplub’s meeting on March 9. in her •Safe keeping, Flagrant finished in the fiddle of the course with a paralysing jrun and snatcheu victory by a short foad. Flagrant, by Captain Bunsby from the Trespasser mare Caught, Jialf-sister to Forestry, was purchased In New Zealand by Mr J. Keith Angus Jit the January sales last year for 40 fjineas. rotest Withdrawn

5 Although the Auckland Racing Club Jtecided last week to protest against She executive committee of the New SBealand Racing Conference in not Granting Saturday, June 6, Wednesday, 4ime 10. and Saturday, June I{| for 4he Great Northern meeting, and in ♦Hotting the club Saturday, Maj|. 30, Wednesday, June 3, and Saturday, June

6, the club has now" agreed to accept the latter dates for this season, but to insist that the club be granted the first Saturday in June and the succeeding Wednesday and Saturday in future seasons.

Imported from England Imported horses to Australia have not been prominent in racing there during the last three years. Denis Boy, who won the Metropolitan in 1931 and the Caulfield Cup in 1932, was the most noteworthy performer of recent years from the Old Country. Unless a good number of shrewd critics are mistaken, Plymouth Sound, a four-year-old son of Coronach and the Polymelus mare Plymstock, who reached Melbourne from England last month, may be expected to earn distinction as a cup horse. Plymouth Sound, who was bought in England for 2500 guineas, is owned by Messrs E. L. Baillieu, W. Clark, and W. S. Robinson, He has taken so readily to Aus-, tralian conditions as to encourage an early start in his preparation, and is now included in the numerous team trained by J. Holt. Sydney Yearling Sales The Australian-bred horse Heroic, by Valais—Chersonese, now looks sure to head the winning sires' list again this year. Up to January 31, which marks the first six months of the oresent season, his progeny had won 49 races and stakes worth more than £15,000. The list of yearlings entered to be offered at the approaching auction sales in New South Wales shows that Heroic's progeny number 34 (18 fillies and 16 colts). The New Zealand-bred horse Veilmond, by Limond —Veil, who was relegated to the stud in 1933. is represented at this year's sale with a contribution of 21. High-priced Purchases The sale of the three-year-old colt Heritage for 2500gns adds another to the list of New Zealand-bred horses sold at' a high figure (writes "Phaeton"). The lot enumerated below, comprising sales during the last 20 years, were all private transactions. In many instances the sum involved was stated to be in guineas and also in pounds, and, with uncertainty existing on the point, the statement must be given as follows: —

Ammon Ra stands out as the bright particular bargain of the above list, for his winnings after his purchase for 3500 guineas amounted to £22,996. In the case of Synagogue, the price received from a New Zealand owner, Mr C F.. Robertson, by his breederowner. Mr W. S. Clark, of Inangahua, was 2500 guineas, but later the colt was sold to go to Australia for 1500 guineas.

SILVER RING TO RACE ON SATURDAY

PETER PAN TO BE RETIRED (UNITED PEB3B ASSOCIATION* COPTBIGHT.) SYDNEY, March 30. J. Stewart, trainer of Silver Ring, states that the horse, who did a sterling gallop at the Victoria . Park course on Saturday, will start in the Chipping Norton Stakes at Warwick Farm next Saturday. Peter Pan will have his last rac_ at the Randwick autumn meeting. Although he has been entered for the King’s Cup, which is to be run at Adelaide on May 16, the owner, Mr Dangar, stated that Peter Pan will not make the trip. SENSATION IN BRISBANE SUSPECTED DRUGGING OF HORSE BRISBANE, March 30. The racehorse Lady Melwyn died yesterday from the effects of some very powerful drug. The horse was a runner in the Purse Handicap at the Albion Park races on Saturday. She went quietly to the barrier, but during the running of the race became so obstreperous that the jockey was forced to pull her up. The horse was unable to see when she returned to the enclosure and dashed into a fence. A veterinary surgeon expressed the opinion that she had been poisoned. A post-mortem examination was made and the contents of 'the stomach were sent to the Government analyst.

TROTTING NOTES

Reminders Nominations for the Ashburton Trotting Club’s autumn meeting will close on Thursday at 8 p.m. Nominations for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting will close on Thursday at 12 noon. A Correction The totalisator investments at the Cheviot meeting on Saturday amounted to £3948, not £3348, as published. This represents a decrease of £536 10s on last year’s figures. improving Since coming from Australia the trotter, Carl, though showing good form on the training tracks, has quite failed to live up to his big reputation with the colours up. The form shown at Cheviot on Saturday, however, may give trainer F. C. Dunlevey a ray of hope, for Carl conceded up to 96 yards start and put up a capital race. The class may not have been very good, but Carl trotted the mile and a half in 3min 37sec—very creditable time under the conditions. Cheviot’s Difficulties There is no doubt about the enthusiasm of officials of the Cheviot Trotting Club, and their work on Saturday under adverse conditions was commendable. Cheviot, however, is faced with difficulties that cannot be surmounted at present, and there is a doubt whether the club would be well advised to hold another meeting under existing conditions. Luckily for all concerned the weather for the latest meeting was fine, for there is practically no shelter from rain outside the secretary’s tent and the booth. The totalisator arrangements are primitive and revive memories of days when Messrs Hobbs and Goodman controlled the betting in a machine mounted on a carrier’s cart. The sport provided was enjoyable and the finishes at times very exciting, but this does not assist the club to encourage light harness racing. The club will have to consider seriously its policy in the near future, and from what could be gathered from officials on Saturday there is every prospect of application being made for a change of headquarters. The Cheviot racecourse is too far away from the city to draw a big crowd and cannot rely on the support of Kaikoura sportsmen. There was a suggestion that the club should seek the support of enthusiasts in other districts and apply for a permit to race on the North Canterbury Racing Club s course, but the more popular idea is to make headquarters at Amberley and work in with the Amberley Racing Club. This appears to be quite a good solution of the difficulty, for Amberley, less than 40 miles from Christchurch, is within easy reach of a big population in Rangiora and the surrounding districts, the centre of considerable breeding activity. In recent years several well-known sires have stood in the North Canterbury district, and many of the farmers there are good patrons of the light harness sport. With transport made comparatively easy, a meeting held in the district would be assured of success. The support of owners, trainers, and trotting followers generally could almost be guaranteed, and under the guidance of the present responsible officials, reinforced by other North Canterbury sportsmen, a fixture on a suitable date would soon become as successful as any held outside Addington. The suggestion of a change of headquarters is well worth consideration, and the trotting authorities could be depended upon to give a move like this their sympathetic consideration. A Well-bred Pacer St. Helena, winner of two events at Cheviot on Saturday, is a well-bred four-year-old filly by Wrack—Bonilene, by The Bondsman —Madeline Marshall, by Demonic. Bonilene was imported from America by F. Holmes and left. a very consistent performer in Bonny Logan. St. Helena is the property of Mr M. Gillies, a wellknown Addington sportsman. A Quick Return W. J. Doyle bought Highrate for 25 guineas last month, and his winnings in stakes at Cheviot amounted to £4O. It is only reasonable to suppose that the Doyleston trainer also supported his trotter on the totalisator, so that he has already received a good return on his outlay. Highrate may not be a champion, but he is a good stamp of trotter and will win more races. He is a flve-year : old half-brother to useful performers in Final McKinney, Ballade, and Gyrate and is by Guy Parrish from Glade, by Logan Pointer —Merce, by Galindo from Authoress, the dam of Author Dillon. Southland-bred Pacer The connexions of Southern Smile are reported to have had a good win over the mare’s success at Cheviot, and if this form is anything to go on there may be further wins in store. Southern Smile was always going comfortably, and her 2min 14 2-ssec for the mile could have been improved upon. Southern Smile is another product of a Logan Pointer mare in Regina Logan, whose dam, Regina de Oro, was by Copa de Oro from Regina Belle, the dam of Logan Chief. Official Injured The Forbury Park Club’s starter, Mr W, Rudkin, had a wrist broken in a motor-car accident, when returning from the Roxburgh Trotting Club’s meeting last week. Trotting Events No trotting races are included in the programmes of racing clubs in Hawke’s Bay, and the president of the Racing Conference (who lives in Hawke’s Bay) was once credited with stating that any club which would not carry on without the help of trots should go out, says a South Canterbury writer. It looks as if that fate might overtake some Hawke’s Bay clubs. Last season the average stake a race in the Bay district was less than £7O, and the average turnover £586. Southland, where every club includes trotting races, gave an average of £ll4 and put through £ll6O a race. Yet Hawke’s Bay exercises six votes on the Racing Conference, compared with Southland’s three, and Dunedin’s five, and only one fewer than Wellington or Canterbury. In Adelaide The Adelaide trotting track is about two and a half furlongs in circumference and in the ordinary course of events it would be possible for drivers to mistake the number of rounds to be covered. The authorities, however, have made things easier for the reinsman by the erection of a wire which carries a number of different coloured lights. As each round is completed one light is switched off, so on the commencement of the last round only one is left showing. In the event of a false start a row of green lights is shown across the track. The sport has become so popular that the committee has decided to receive only one nomination of each horse at its meetings. By Louis Direct At Port Pirie, South Australia, on March 14. Louis Durfee, by imported Louis Direct from Don’s Jewel, won a double. On each occasion he was at odds-on. Louis Durfee, a four-year-old black gelding, was bred in New South Wales by Mr R. C. Simpson, who paid a big price to bring the sire from America. Louis Durfee is a halfbrother to Wilbur White, a winner in Australia and New Zealand, and therefore a descendant of the great Jewell’s Heiress. The Riccarton studmaster, Free Holmes, is in communication with Mr Simpson with a view to leasing Louis Direct for next season. Encourage the Trotter In Melbourne the square-gaited horse is better catered for than in any other part of Australia, but there is no question that the quality is deteriorating, says the Australian “Record.” In years gone by Victorian trotters were capable of competing in hoppled company, and got their share of wins. The majority iof horses bred nowadays favour the pacing gait, and there being no races for Derby trotters, either before or after the annual event, owners have no incentive to persevere with their juveniles.
