HISTORIC CHURCH
CENTENARY CELEBRATED AT RUSSELL
(PRISS /LSSOCUTIOK Tr.LEURA.iI .} WHANGAREI, March 30. The centenary of Christ Church at Russell was celebrated yesterday, when Archbishop Averill conducted a service, which was attended by 500. The altar was erected outside the historic building, which is the oldest church in New Zealand. It was in this church that Captain Hobson, in January, 1840, proclaimed his appointment as Lieutenant-Gover-nor over such parts of New Zealand as the native chiefs would cede sovereignty to Queen Victoria. During the Hone Heke war the church walls were penetrated by rifle bullets and also by a ball fired from H.M.S. Hazard. The holes are still visible. • In the churchyard lie the remains of notable figures in New Zealand's earliest history.
