NEW ZEALAND CYCLISTS FOR OLYMPIC GAMES

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir,—With your kind permission I would like to thank your correspondents for the information they have

supplied concerning our leading cyclists. One letter, signed “Timekeeper,” was a direct reply to my query, but was too biased for any consideration; consequently I decided to lie low and see what others had to say on this important subject. Several letters appeared from supporters of both men. all admitting that Giles was a track cyclist well above the average; so with youth on his side, it seems obvious that he has not yet reached the peak of his form. On

the other hand, some contradictory statements were made by different writers about different titles, which made things difficult for me to grasp. However, as Giles has just scoopedi tne pool at both Canterbury and New Zealand championships, and I understand has also registered some very fast times, I do not think the issue can be left in doubt. As regards to the performances of Grose, it appears to me that road racing in New Zealand and overseas is run under different conditions altogether, so that Grose would b have little chance against the opposition in any road event. His times in the New Zealand races cannot therefore be compared with overseas times, I feel very grateful to your correspondents for their different views, which have helped me to Judge both riders individually, and I . have no hesitation in saying that Giles should go to the games, providing the necessary funds are fjrthcommg to send him.—Yours, etc., DONATION.
