GREYMOUTH MAGISTRATE'S COURT (SPECIAL TO TH» PBESS.) GREYMOUTH, March 10. At yesterday's sitting of the Magistrate's Court, Edward Michael Quinn, licensee of the Suburban Hotel, was charged with having opened the premises for the sale of liquor, exposing liquor for sale, and with having sold liquor after hours on February 28. For defendant, Mr J. W. Hannan pleaded guilty to the charge of selling and the other two charges were withdrawn by the police. The magistrate (Mr H. Morgan) said that the case was more serious than Sost cases of the kind. The evidence Sowed that a system was employed for Wholesale after-hours trading. When the corner of the window was struck by a motor-lorry owned by Ashby, Bergh and Company, yesterday morninf, two large panes of glass in the centre show window of the Mayfair Department Store were broken. The lorry was left unattended, with the engine running, on the wharf side of the street, and suddenly ran across the road, mounted the kerb, and struck the window. Social Evenings An enjoyable evening was spent at the residence of Mrs Frank Beale, Blackball, when Mesdames Beale and Shields held a handkerchief party, m honour of Miss Winnie McCallum, who is to be married shortly. Vocal solos were given by Winnie McCallum, Mr Shields, and Mr Norman Smith, vocal duets by Mr and Mrs Colin Smith, Highland fling by Mrs Cleghorn, accompanied by Mr Beale and Mr Pratt (mouth organs), exhibition dance by Mr and Mrs Colin Shields. Miss Gilda Beale was the winner of the table tennis competition. Among those present were Misses Winnie McCallum, Gilda Beale, Ellen Green, Lil Baldterstone, Chris. Waters, May Shields, Jean Frickleton, Nancy Leich, Mary Allan, Dorothy Mason, Nancy Pasco, Bertie Neilson, Vivian Knowles. Mr and Mrs W. Watson (Dobson) were entertained at the home of Mr and Mrs Anthony (Dobson) by a large number of friends, before their departure for Whangarei, where they will reside. An was spent in games, competitions, and singing, Miss M. Watson (Taylorville) played the music. Competitions were won by Messrs Mooney, J. Bell, B. Boustridge, Mrs T. Clark, Mrs Bell, and Mr Julian. Mr J. Bell, for the residents of, Dobson, presented Mr and Mrs Watson with a travelling rug. Mr Watson suitably responded. An enjoyable supper was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Dunn and Anthony.

HOKITIKA LIGHT FROST (SPICIAL TO THI PM6SB.) HOKITIKA, March 9. Hokitika experienced a slight frost this morning, the temperature falling to just below freezing point.

Train Hits Mob of Cattle

The excursion train which left in the early hours of Saturday morning for the cricket test at Christchurch, ran into a mob of cattle at Arahura. One animal was killed, and the train was delayed for half-an-hour.

Hokitika Aerodrome

• A visit was paid to the Hokitika aerodrome on Saturday by Messrs Thompson (general manager) and Bou (chief pilot) of the Cook Strait Airways Company. The company s large six-passenger aeroplanes are to begin their trips from the north to Hokitika as soon as the ground is ready. The improvements to the grounds are progressing rapidly, about 140 men being employed at the present time. It is anticipated that another four months will be needed before the service can be begun. The new outlet for Fisherman's creek has been finished, and the old course is being filled in. The worK of building an embankment along the edges of the Hokitika river and Mahinapua creek is well advanced. REEFTON CRICKET (SPECIAL TO Til PXEBS.) REEFTON, March 9. Playing at Reefton in the Foster Cup competition, Nelson Creek beat Reefton by 47 runs on the first innings. The scores were: Nelson Creek 133 (Tibbies 60, Craig 12, O'Callaghan 11, Ord 13, Ogilvie 11); Reefton 86 (McKeazie 39, Blom 18, Campbell 10). Bowling for Reefton, McKenzie took four Wickets for 31, Blom four for 53, Hunt one for 16. and for Nelson Creek O'Brien took seven wickets for 35 runs and Tibbies three for 27. The death took place at the Reefton Hospital of Alexander Langley, aged 59 years, a native of Dunedin. For the last 20 years Mr Langley worked in various quartz mines in the district, and for the last two years had suffered acutely from miners' phthisis. Mr Langley was a member ofythe Robert Burns Lodge, Reefton. Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Mrs L. Watson (Crushington) and Miss Eva Langley, of the nursing staff of the Westland Hospital. Funeral The funeral of Mrs C. Nevin took place at the Suburban cemetery, and was one of the largest ever seen in Reefton. Those present included a large number of members of the Druids' Order, of which Mr Nevin is a past secretary. The services at the Sacred Heart Church and at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. Father Heavey.

Mrs G. White and Miss Sherlock, Crushington, are on a-visit to Dunedin. Mrs O. Collins and daughter have returned from an extended visit to Christchurch. Man Chops Foot Mr J. Howard, employed at the Lewis Pass, was brought into Reefton yesterday with an injured foot. He had almost severed the big toe of the left foot while chopping wood. He was attended by Dr. J. L. Wicken. Inangahua Show Fine weather was experienced for People's Day at the annual show of the Inangahua Agricultural and Pastoral Association, held on tho Reefton racecourse.
