Of the 24 calls. | eight were for actual fires in or o»| property in the city, six were for rubr| bish and grass fires, five were maliciou*.| false alarms, four were false alarm** from various causes, and one was a fire in Fendalton. -: ; , Commenting on malicious fire alarms..; the chairman, Mr T. M. Charters, said ■ he had recently read that in Melbourne | the fire brigade had .1800 malicious* false alarms in a year. Each malicious,, false alarm cost £5, so that the totaK cost in a year from malicious faMr" alarms was £9OOO. ' In an attempt to reduce the number of malicious false alarms, Mr Charters . said, the Melbourne brigade had estab- * lished six stands in the city and suburbs to try out a new patent alarm. When the alarm was broken a loua , bell rang and continued to ring untu the brigade turned it off. . # % The average number of malicious calls in Christchurch, Mr Charters said, was five or six a month. _
