RETURNING OFFICER'S STAFF

tO THH SDITOJB OW tt» Pft*S9. Sir,— "Ratepayer's" complaint of qualified unemployed men being unable to secure work as deputies on election day is one that requires more explanation than is supplied...by the Returning Officer, Mr A. Freeman, who admits frankly that his isi not a perfect selection. It could scarcely be, when men and women in permanent positions are allowed to fill these jobs for the day, while qualified persons who are unemployed, must stand aside. We often rave about British fair play and justice. Is Ihis fair or just? Only through "The Press" can any light be thrown on abuses of justice. If, aS Mr Freeman states, 350 disappointed applicants must stand down, is there not among the 350 sufficient qualified to fill the positions given to those in permanent work, well-paid superannuated men, and persons of' independent means. What we require are some nice new brooms.—Yours, etc., JUSTICE. March 9, 1936. [This letter was referred to the Returning Officer, Mr Albert Freeman, who stated that he had no further comment to make.]
