♦ ANNUAL MEETING HELD A successful year was shown by the annual report presented at the annual meeting of the Linwood Library, held last evening, Mr E. H. Andrews presided over a large attendance of subscribers. Membership showed a sllebt, increase, the total figures being 1739, stated the annual report. The financial position of the library was in keeping with precedent, a credit balance being shown. The income received from subscriptions and charges on extra books had been utilised largely in the purchase of reading matter for members. The total Income received from subscriptions was £523 17s 6d and that from extra books £360 10s lid. The Christchurch City Council granted the sum of £IOO, following recent practice.' Although £SO less than the subsidy formerly given, the committee was deeply grateful for the assistance. There had been 1804 books added to the shelves during the year, the total number of volumes on the shelves being approximately 16,900. During the year the library had been successful in publishing the "Linwood Library Gazette," a monthly journal devoted tp book reviews and other matters pertaining to library work. A deputation had waited upon the financial committee of the Christchurch City Council requesting an increased subsidy and a new building to replace the present structure, which was severely taxed for shelving space and accommodation for subscribers. The request was not granted, although the councillors present realised that there were good grounds for the claim. In moving the adoption of the annual report, the chairman congratulated the library on a successful year The balance-sheet showed a credit of £46, which was a good sign, and snowed that the money was being expended to the advantage of the subscribers.
