WAIAU EWE FAIR

A KEEN DEMAND FURTHER ADVANCE IN PRICES The Waiau ewe fair was held yesterday. The storm that visited Can-, terbury on Monday was not so severe in the Amuri district in the quantity of rain that fell as it was in some districts further south, and although a good deal of difficulty was met with by some vendors in getting their sheep to the fair on account of the boisterous conditions, most of the lines advertised came to hand. There were a few drafts from further inland that did not appear, but about 17,000 of the 18,000 penned came to hand. The day was gloriously fine ana there was a large attendance of downcountry farmers. The sheep generally did not look as well as at the two previous fairs at Amberley i and Hawarden. Shearing was much later in the high country, and a number of the lines were not so fine m tne wool. The standard lines from the well-known stations'bear a reputation for doing well down country, and these generally were in good order. 1 Included in the penning were several drafts from southern Marlborough, and one pen of two-tooths from this quarter sold at. 40s. The sale was a remarkably keen one, and there was a further advance on the rates ruling at Amberley. The two-tooth ewes, with which the fair opened yesterday, ranged about 2s a head better, taking quality for quality. Top price of the fairs so far this season was received for a pen of 76 halfbreds from Norman Eutherford tMendip Hills), which made 455. They were a particularly even lot. Last year top price of the fair was 28s 6d, for a line of 206 from P. R. Dearden (The Gates). There were numerous other sales of two-tooths at from 35s to 38s. Four-year-old sheep advanced on Amberley rates by about Is 6d a head. Top figure was 335, the first run-off of P. R. Deardon's entry of 330 making this figure and the remainder 325. At the last fair the 388 in the line from Little Bros. (Annandale) topped the market at 23s 6d. The ewes from this station yesterday sold at 32s 6d for the line of 350, or an advance of 9s on last year. Good serviceable four-year ewes were steadily selling yesterday at from 26s to 295, and in some cases to 30s. A pen of 131 five-year ewes from A. J. Pullan (Craigowan) sold at 23s 9d. At the last fair top price was 15s 3d. A number of small pens of four and five-year ewes at the conclusion of the sale maintained the good rates set earlier. The fair definitely indicated that all the ewes available at the remainder of the fairs will be wanted by farmers. The final of the North Canterbury fairs will be held at Culverden to-morrow, the penning at this fair generally being much the largest of the series. The silver cup presented by Mr E. P. H. Burbury, of Sherwood, to the owner of the best line of twotooths sold at the Waiau fair, was presented yesterday by the donor to Mr Norman Rutherford. Mr Burbury said his object was to encourage the breeding of the best ewes possible, and the pen that had won the prize was an exceptionally good one. The ewes were, first cross English LeicesterMerino. This is the third year that Mr Burbury has presented the cup for competition.
