Fourteen new members of the Legislative; Council have been nominated by the Labour Government. The list includes a previous Speaker of the House of Representatives, tiie Hon. Sir Charles Statham, Mr John Alexander McCullough, a former workers' representative on the Arbitration Court, and a representative of the native race, Mr Rangi Mawhete, of Awapuni. The nominees will be sworn in when the new Parliament meets on March 25. The names of the nominated Legislative Councillors are:— Mr Mark Brings (Palmerston North).

Mr Michael Connelly was born at Kakaiamea. Taranaki, where liis father was a fanner. At an 'early age he moved to the West. He is also a member of tho South Auckland Dairy Association. Mr Cotter was born in Comity Cork, Ireland, and came to New Zealand with his parents. He first lived at Coromandel. and at V/aihi, where he wai engaged in goldmimng. He took up farming at. Hinucra 25 years ago.

MR THOMAS DOYLE

Apprenticed to th" marine engineering trade, lie followed that work for 20 year;-. In 1P27 he purchased a business in Bluff, lie first entered local politics in 1919 as a councillor of the Borough of Bluff, and served* two terms hs Mavor of Bluff. In 1933 he was elected "representative of the borough on the Bluff Harbour Board, and was re-elected at the last election. He sawed for four years as chairman of the Bluff Unemployment Committee, and for five years as president- of the Bluff Progressive League. Since his boyhood. Mr Doyle has been associated with the Labour movement, and for several years was secretary of the Bluff branch of the New Zealand Labour partv. He contested the Awania seat at the last general election.

MR EDWARD DYE

Mr Edward Dye has for several years been president of the Ohinemuri Mines and Batteries Union. Kis association with the mining industry has extended over many years, and he has worked chiefly as a member of an underground contract party. In recent years, in addition to mi"ing. he has engaged in farming.
