FLOWER SHOWS

AUTUMN DISPLAY AT DARFIELD HIGH QUALITY OF EXHIBITS The Darfield Horticultural and Home Industries Association held its autumn show in the Darfield Memorial Hall on Saturday. The entries', totalling in the vicinity of 500, showed a decrease on previous shows. The decrease in the entries was due to the unfavourable weather lately experienced and the lateness of the harvesting operations. The quality of the exhibits was very good, and those in the novice, decorative, and homecraft sections were outstanding. The show was opened by Mr C. Morgan Williams, M.P-, who congratulated the exhibitors on the display. Mr L. B. Hart (Christchurch) staged an exhibit of dahlias and gave an interesting address on dahlia culture. There was a good attendance of the public at the afternoon and evening sessions of the show.

The following were the judges:—Cut flowers, Mr L. B. Hart; decorative, Mrs E. L. King; fruit, Mr C. H. Adams; vegetables, Mr L. T. Wright; home industries, Mrs C. Mcintosh; home craft, Mrs R. MacDonald; photography, Mr G. C. Warren; children's competitions, Mr G. E. Cathwright.

Organised by the Omilii Valley Institute group, comprising the members ol' Ilic Omihi, Scargill, and Waipara Women's Institutes, a (lower show was held in the Omilii Hall on Saturday last. The show was the first function of this nature to be held in tin; Omilii district, and it was well supported and quite successful, Ihe number of entries totalling about 530. There was a j'.ooci display in all sections, particularly in the cookery, needlework, fruit, and vegetables sections, and some exhibits in the cut flowers and decorative work weie of outstanding merit. There was also keen competition in the juvenile classes. An interesting display of antique articles lent by members of the three institutes was held in conjunction with the show. Some of the articles were several centuries old and of considerable value. The arrangements were efficiently carried out by the committee and stewards under the direction of the group president, Mrs T. D. Mac Donald. and the show secretaries, Miss O. Gibb and Mrs L. If.
