IMPROVEMENTS TO THE SQUARE

PROPOSALS FOR TRAFFIC LAYOUT TRAMWAY BOARD TO OBTAIN REPORT A report on proposals for the improvements of the layout of the tramc and tramway arrangements in at "p" dral square is to be obtained by tne Christchurch Tramway Board, following representations made by tne Christchurch Beautifying Association. A decision to this effect, made by tne board's works and traffic committee, was approved at a meeting, of tne board yesterday. • , , , „„ The report of the works and traffic committee stated that a deputation .from the association,, consisting oi Messrs R. B. Owen. Irving Sladen, and T. S. Dacre. waited on the committee with reference to improvements in Cathedral square traffic and tramway layout. Plans of the association's suggestions were passed round, and Mr Owen explained detailjs, which were briefly as follows: — „ . . . That the present west track in front of the Cathedral be moved about four feet further west , That the present safety zone and cast tracks in front \ of the Cathedral to be moved about eight feet further east. „ .. That the present tracks on the south side of the Square, from which the Sumner and Woolston cars leave at present, be moved about, eight feet further north. A safety zone is suggested alongside this track for the loading of tram passengers. That an alteration be. made to tne curve used by the -Sumner cars on the north end of the Godley plot. The committee had decided that a report be prepared on the practicability and cost of these suggestions.
