TORRENTIAL RAIN AT GISBORNE
EAST COAST TRAFFIC DISLOCATED

GISBORNE, March 8
As the result of torrential rain on Friday night and Saturday morning rivers on the east coast were flooded, and traffic on the main road between Gisborne and Te Araroa was dislocated. The Tolaga Bay township was completely isolated on all sides. An approach to the bridge near the school was washed away, while two feet of water surrounded some houses. Further north rivers were in flood and creehjs were impassable. Mail trucks were held up between Tikitiki and Ruatoria because of slips on the main road. On the south side of Gisborne the water rose rapidly in the Waipaoa river, and, though settlers were anxious, no land was seriously inundated. In Gisborne some properties in Ihe suburbs were temporarily flooded as the drains were inadequate to carry the water, but no damage was done. The rain ceased at about noon on Saturday and the
