♦ The Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister for Industries and Commerce, arrived in Christchurch from the north by the steamer express on Saturday morning. Chief-Detective W. H. Dunlop has resumed his duties after his annual leave. Dr. J. P. McQuilkin left last night for the south to act for a week as medical officer to the military camp at Sutton, Otago Centra’. Mr W. G. McKenzie, grand vice-president of the Grand Lodge of Canterbury, U.A.O. Druids, will leave for Dunedin this morning to attend the annual conference of the Grand Lodge of Otago and Southland, to be held tomorrow. Mr Fred G- Dunn, attorney, and Mr W Brmstockc, field superintendent of Austral Mafay Tin. Ltd., left on Saturday morning by the West Coast express for Reefton. Dr P. Clennell Fenwick was a passenger from the north by the steamer express yesterday morning. Mr H. S. S. Kyle, M.P., arrived from the north by the steamer express on Saturday morning. The Hon. T. O’Byrne, M.L.C., arrived from Wellington by the steamer express on Saturday morning and left later for Invercargill. Mr J. E. Bull, chief clerk at Napier, will take over the management of the Gisborne branch. Mr Stanley Grant, who has been touring New Zealand as manager of the “White Horse Inn” company, returned to Sydney by the Monowai. Mr G. W. Reid, of Dunedin,' has been selected to represent the Dominion at the Australasian Congress on Accounting, which will open at Melbourne on March 16. In recognition of his valuable woi’k for the Christchurch branch of the Dickens Fellowship, Mr A. E. Caddick was on Saturday elected the first honorary life member of the branch. Mr Dan Calwell, only son of Constable and Mrs Calwell, of Coalgate, who is in England, has passed his first professional examination for the A.M.I.C.E. Mr Donald Cowie, of Christchurch, will leave New Zealand at the end of this month on a visit to the United Kingdom and the Continent. Mr Cowie, who has contributed articles and short stories to several publications in New Zealand and overseas, has had a book on New Zealand accepted by a London publisher, Denis Archer, and he will supervise its publication. He is also taking to England a collection of short stories and a novel which he has written. Mr Cowie, who is the eldest son of Mr and Mrs George Cowie, Carlton Mill road, will leave Wellington on March 31 to join the R.M.S. Orsova at Sydney.
