LAWN TENNIS

SENIOR MIXED GRADE CATHEDRAL BEATS UNITED Cathedral, by beating United in the senior mixed grade tenpjs competition at Wilding Park on Saturday afternoon by 11 sets to five, is now the virtual winner of this grade. Cathedral’s win was a decisive one. Until Saturday neither Cathedra} nor United had been beaten. An unexpected defeat was that of Miss Irine Poole, second player on the Canterbury women’s tennis ladder, who was beaten by Miss Isabel Morrison, sixth player on the ladder, in the CathedralUnited match. Miss Morrison’s superior tactics enabled her to take the match, 6-1. stroking weil to bom lines, Miss Morrison forced Miss Poole into errors. Although Miss Poole fought hard, she could not counter Miss Morrison’s well-placed drives, and right from the start Miss Morrison had control. There were few incidents in the game, it being chiefly a baseline duel with little play at the net. Miss Poole was, judging by her efforts, off form, but that did not detract from the merit of Miss Morrison's win. The winner kept her opponent on the defensive with accurate placements. In the same match J. Mahoney, of Cathedral, played well to beat J. W. D. Fisher, the ranking player. Miss Dorothy Dickey was playing erratically, and Miss T. Poole had a fairly easy victory over her, - Results were as follows: SENIOR MIXED GRADE Cathedral v. United MEN’S SINGLES J. Mahoney beat J. W- D. Fisher, 9-7. J. Mercer lost to C. R. Ogier, 5-0. M. SECONDARY SCHOOLS ANNUAL TOURNAMENT ON SATURDAY More than 380 entries were received for the Canterbury Junior Lawn Tennis Association’s annual secondary schools’ : tournament, which was begun on Saturday morning. Thid* tournament is the largest annual gathering of tennis players in New Zealand and the present one is the tenth to be held. It is expected that the tournament will last three or four Saturday mornings. On Saturday thp girls’ games were played at Wilding Park and the boys’ games bn the Lmwoocl Tennis Club’s courts, 33 courts being in use. Next week all games will be played at Wilding Park. Because this year the number of entries for each school was limited to six, there were 32 fewer entries in the gjrls competition, and seven fewer in the boys' competition. As the entries from the girls’ schools have always been larger than those from boys’ schools, it is possible that the restriction on the number of entries from boys’ schools will be lifted next year. The falling off in entries was chiefly in the open doubles competition. Entries were received from all th.e city schools, Amberley House, and the Rangiora, Sumner, Lyttelton, and New' Brighton District High Schools. The tournament is being conducted by Mr H. G. Wake, president of the junior association, Mr R. Gartner, the secretary, and teachers from the secondary schools.
